August 2025 in Review

It's only a few days into September, but it's been a whirlwind the past couple weeks. I have to pause and remind myself that Albert has only been in Kindergarten for three weeks (as he reminded me today is day 14). I have only had one week of school so far. Since I'm teaching labs, there are no class meetings this week since it is the week of a Monday holiday (Labor Day), so that no sections fall behind. When I look back at what we did during August, I can see why I feel so whirly.

The month kicked off with the Dopey Strong 7 Dwarves Challenge. Each day, we were supposed to dress up like a different dwarf and add a few strength moves into our running plan. Then on the 7th day we were supposed to do all the strength moves. I'm not a big fan of run streaking but there were only three days in the month that I didn't at least walk a mile (Aug 8, 10, 12). Sometimes I wonder why I track everything, but then I remember that tracking helps me make sense of the pain I'm in when I can't understand or remember why my feet hurt so much.

There was also a collaboration between Valley Runners and the Goodr Cabana. A group of us from Glendale, Sherman Oaks, Northridge, Winnetka, Burbank (all over the 818) met in Venice Beach every Saturday throughout August.VRLA x Goodr 2025

And to end the month, Crowned Athletics inspired us to dress up for World Princess Week.

I had fun with the challenge, and it got me to do some micro-blogging reflecting on what the Disney princesses mean to me.

CREATIVITY. As a mom, I get creative with my son as we paint, build, dance, cook, sing, and play. As a teacher, I find creative ways to incorporate all that into a college environment. Keeping everyone's spirits up while still enforcing safety rules and regulations. Chemistry doesn't have to be boring! I've got a dream. I want to make chemistry accessible to all students, allowing them to enjoy and learn. πŸ‘©‍πŸ”¬πŸ₯ΌπŸ₯½πŸ§ͺ Rebel princess πŸ‘Έ✊ My first thought of creativity was Rapunzel, who had to pass away the hours locked away in a tower. But I think I'm a rebel princess at heart. Every day, finding creative ways to resist the empire. @crownedathletics #spacebuns #onebadmotherrunner

STRENGTH in motherhood is sometimes carrying your child, carrying your 50 lb folded stroller as you board the bus, bringing in the entire load of groceries from the car to the house in one haul. πŸ›’πŸ›️ Sometimes strength in motherhood is breaking generational trauma, escaping the unreasonable expectations of society, and giving other women a leg up. We all show our strength in different ways, and sometimes just showing up as the best version of you takes strength. πŸ₯‚ πŸ™Œ Here's a high five to celebrate all of the invisible unpaid domestic labor. Sometimes we carry the weight of the family on our shoulders, And even though every day isn't a ball, We still find big and small ways to sparkle and shine through. Thank you for being a part of my family, And thank you for helping to keep me inspired! #gratitude #strengthinmotherhood If I could add one piece to my Powerful Hermana set, it would be the Force Fighter flow tank top. πŸ›ΈπŸ’«πŸš€ I recently introduced my son to the Star Wars movies, and I was so inspired by Rey Skywalker. I'm not sure if she is considered a princess, but she is definitely a role model of strength. She never stopped fighting for freedom, and she never lost hope. No family is perfect, but finding your identity and drawing strength from your ancestors has always been a powerful force for me.

KINDNESS. The story of The Little Mermaid reminds us to practice kindness with our own bodies. There may be some part of your body that you wish were different. #bodypositive Ariel is doomed to want something she cannot have. She is willing to gamble her voice in exchange for the opportunity to experience her heart's desire, but only for 3 days. And if she is unable to achieve a nearly impossible task, she loses everything. The mermaid princess reminds us to appreciate everything our bodies can do. Today I am grateful for my legs. 🦡🧜‍♀️ 🐚🐠 Thank you, legs, for being my favorite form of transportation. Today I am thankful for my voice. πŸŽ΅πŸŽΆπŸ‘©‍🎀 Thank you, voice, for allowing me to express myself. Staying inspired is sometimes a challenge. I have to do whatever motivates me to get out there and stick to my training plan.

BELLA IN SELLA. is a phrase that I learned from the cycling community 🚴‍♀️ #cyclomania. It means riding a horse or bicycle and looking good while doing it. Often, I wear bright colors while riding or running for safety purposes. If you're seen, so much the better, because it lowers the risk of getting into a collision. And a close family member of mine was killed while running because she was hit by a minivan. But sometimes, like this week, I enjoy dressing up just for the fun of it. I find inspiration in the stories I grew up listening to. I wanted to represent Belle today, who didn't start out as a princess, but through her kindness, she came to love the Beast. I identified with Belle because she loved books and was a gorgeous brunette, like me. And, like her, I fell in love with a man who had a great bookshelf. πŸ“š # Bibliophile: I get to refresh my memory on Disney princesses, villains, and heroines by telling bedtime stories to my son as he falls asleep. He doesn't consciously remember every story, but I know he hears me. He puts princess figurines all around our bedroom for protection. Loving the energy from @fit4mom_west_sfv this morning. Showing up and being surrounded by kindness, moms supporting other moms, makes the journey of motherhood so much better. #communityinmotherhood #raisekindhumans #momssupportmoms #ourvillage #motherhoodsisterhood #worldprincessweek

GRACE. If you are newly postpartum or raising small children, you've got to give yourself grace. It's going to take time to get your energy back. Motherhood has been a powerful motivator for me. I want to be able to keep up with my son, so I keep pushing myself to stay strong and ready. Initially, when I thought of grace, I thought of Mulan. I'm not sure Princess is part of her back story, but she was a strong influence in my childhood. I was a tomboy. I ended up in a male-dominated career field. I've always tried to keep up with men and fit in among them. To be just as smart, fast, and strong. Mulan did what she did to protect her father and bring honor to her family. She was an epic failure at being a #tradwife but an epic success at leading an army. She exceeded her family's expectations and ended up with an even better match than any matchmaker would have found for her. Mulan reminds us to gracefully pursue our destiny, even if it doesn't fit with society's expectations for us. I thought about the graceful movements of a swords(wo)man. I realize that the modern military is different than the fighting style depicted in Mulan. I feel grateful for our military service men and women. Thanks to our veterans and first responders as well. ⚔️ Finally, I thought about how some workouts are tough. You have to give yourself the grace to suck sometimes. The law of averages will balance it out eventually with a workout that kicks ass in a good way. Today I felt so strong, graceful, and fast. ⚖️ Keep showing up. #ownthecrown #stronglooksdifferent

BRAVE. The brave thing I did today was bring my kid to work. His school has a holiday but my school did not. Today's theme got me thinking about various times in my life where I took a leap of faith. One of the biggest leaps I took was when I moved to California. I knew the cost of living was going to be really high. But I also knew that ultimately it was where I wanted to be. I wasn't sure how it was going to work out, but I was brave enough to go for it with the faith that I would figure it out. The second biggest leap of faith that I took was going through IVF. It was so expensive with no guarantees. It was like going through puberty again at 39 years old. I had to confront some of my biggest fears and misconceptions about becoming a mother. Thankfully for us, it only took one round. I'm so grateful that I was brave enough to take these leaps of faith. Finishing my PhD at UC Riverside was such a significant moment in my life. Training for and completing the LA Marathon (while wearing my Changed Fate set) was no big deal after becoming a doctor and then becoming a mother. If you're thinking about chasing a big goal or taking a leap of faith in the direction of your dreams, consider this a gentle push in that direction. Be brave.

STROLLER MILES. On my way to inspire the next generation of chemistry and biochemistry graduate students with my stroller and kindergartner, I dictated a lot of these microblogs while walking to and from school. Thanks to my bestie, Mykel for reminding me that it's okay to parent in public and that allowing students to see the joys and challenges of having children is a good thing. It's essential to make the work-life balancing act more visible. And this is also a post of appreciation for @bobgearus. I brought all the necessary items for my child and myself, as well as the supplies for my students. We had a fun day on campus. I love this stroller so much. I'll forever remember this as the vehicle that made all of our Disneyland dreams come true. BOB is an acronym for Beast of Burden, which is also a great song by the Rolling Stones. My Changed Fate set gives me powerful mama bear vibes when I need to remember how being a mom is my superpower. I also love how Merida was the shot caller in her story. She repairs the strained relationship with her mother and learns how to be more selfless. Even though Fit4Mom now pairs with Thule as their official stroller, I will never forget the BOB as my favorite part of strolling with my mini-me. My stroller model is BOB Revolution CE = City Edition which weighs ONLY 23 lbs.

I tried my darndest to get through August without overdosing on ibuprofen. However, on August 31st, I finally took some ibuprofen, which relieved the pain in my feet. It was an increase in miles, too much, too soon. I forgot how school drop-off adds extra mileage to the week. But as I say, we're trying to ease into the school year, and it's okay if there are some growing pains. Albert asked me to make him a social battery indicator so that he can have time to recharge without us bothering him too much. He's always had a high emotional intelligence, and this just shows that he can ask for a way to communicate with us.

Social Battery Level   Albert August Artwork

Another thing Albert did recently was create two paintings contrasting a poor person's house, which was small, only one story high, and made of reclaimed materials. Versus a rich person's home, which he called the Eiffel Tower, which was multilevel, taller than trees, and made of gold. And for some reason, the poor person is during the day, and the rich person is painted at night, surrounded by stars. This is likely due to my lighter teaching load, which results in less income, and we often discuss this. We tell Albert that we can't afford some things because mommy won't be bringing home as much money. We discuss how we'll need to acquire more items on Buy Nothing, as we can't purchase them. September was a "normal" paycheck, but it will probably be the last "big" one for the next 6 months.

I saw the hashtag #RecessionCore and others, such as #economytok or #costofliving, to express a theme of economic hardship and austerity. We're not the only ones affected by this change in lifestyle. #budgetfriendly #economicanxiety #savingmoney #thrift #tariffs I've never been overly concerned with being trendy, and I know I'm talking about budget here, but here are some things I did buy this summer (or last summer) that I (still) love.

  • ENERBLOOM Women's Yoga Jumpsuits Workout One Piece Rompers with Pockets Bodycon Backless Bodysuits Padded Berry Red X-Large. I wore this on a run, and someone told me I was a whole vibe. I had a SheFit bra underneath and my sequin headband. $19.99 I also wore it to the pool as a swimsuit. I don't know why they don't make more swimsuits like this.
  • Neely Gracey, the mom and running coach, recommended this product as the most comfortable item for summer, and I wholeheartedly agree. I bought one of each color and walked out paying around $50. I like them a lot. I'm glad I bought them when I did. This athletic all-in-one dress trend reached Crowned Athletics, and they sold each one for $118. I know, girl math, but I feel like I saved over $300. https://www.costco.com/elle-sport-women's-active-tank-dress.product.4000293912.html
  • WEBGGER 12 Pack Sequin Headbands Elastic Stretch Sparkly Fashion Headband for Teens Girls Women Hairband Sport Head Band Party Favors Multicolored now $5.94, usually $9.99 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Z2TH288 Honestly, these are the best for summer. The airflow through the sequins is peak performance, and the sparklyness and color choices in this variety pack make my heart happy. I didn't bring one on my trip to Nebraska this year, but thankfully, I had left one the previous summer, and it was still there for me to use while I was visiting. Honestly, lifesaver. Somehow, the sequins are a great way to keep baby hairs from straying. I can't stand when my hair tickles my neck.
  • IDALOP 20 Pairs Cute & Colorful Striped Quarter Crew Women's Colored Socks, Size 9-11 $19.99 So I'm midlife. I have mostly ankle socks. But I noticed when I wear a short skirt, it looks like SO MUCH LEG all the way down to the ankle. People nowadays say that ankle socks are out. So I got these crew socks. I wouldn't care fashion-wise but I do teach college-age students and I don't want to appear too out of touch.
Athleisure on a budget

I also found three pairs of jeggings at ALDI this week. Light blue, dark blue, and light grey. I have some Levi's jeggings that I purchased in the Spring 2023 semester for $27 each. They're finally starting to show daylight in the inner-thigh area after 5 semesters (2.5 years). So these ALDI ones are about half the price. I can't comment yet to their durability since I haven't even washed them yet, but I will use them to teach in for several years probably. I tried on XL and L and the large I couldn't even button / zip. There was a gap in the back of the XL but I guess I can wear a belt. https://www.aldi.us/product/serra-ladies-premium-light-blue-jeggings-m-0000000000072022 $12.99

My aunt noticed my Instagram is looking more colorful these days. I appreciate all the people who inspire me to keep being expressive. I'm glad summer is over, but is it really? We just had our AC fixed today, thank goodness. I know we're in for a few more months of heat. Sometimes it's in triple digits even through the end of October. Albert and I decorated the house yesterday for fall. He was insisting that it be fall but not spooky. Which means leaves and pumpkins, but not haunted houses and jack-o-lanterns.

Albert is dedicated to being a ghost for Halloween, and I've got 3 costumes already, so that the whole family can participate. I'm not sure we're doing the Boo at the Zoo or the Enchanted Halloweekends at the Discovery Cube. We've let all our memberships go. So we need to find a trick-or-treat thing we can do for free. I'm trying my best not to buy the Bath & Body Works Disney Villains collection. I know it will sell out quickly, but do I really need more lotion and hand soap?

It's the weekend of the Santa Monica Classic and the Disneyland Halloween Half-marathon. I'll be sitting these races out and preparing for the Bimbo Global 10k on September 28th. I haven't done that one before, but registration was free, and it's closer to our house. I received a free sample of Ever&Eden Premium Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50, but I'm not impressed with it so far. These are more of my favorites that I buy again and again and use daily.
Wall of Sunscreen at Target

In my efforts to save money, I also cleaned out my cabinets and put all my backstock of personal care products in rotation. Our good friend used to work at Paul Mitchell and would always gift us products whenever we visited him. So I have some shampoos, conditioners, and gels that will be on our bathroom shelves until they're gone. I lived so frugally when I started this blog, while in grad school. I know how to do it, I just wish I didn't have to.

Finally, I realized we're only six weeks away from the Mission Inn Run. I'm totally looking forward to that. I haven't thought about my outfits for race day. But I have time to come up with something.

New Shoe New You

Our campus got a new toy, the BrandU photo booth. Mike and I went over there yesterday to take our headshots. It was my previous CSUN headshot that led me back to running, so I'm grateful for that. But I was hoping for a do-over because I feel like I have at least one less chin now. And it's subtle, but I have new glasses. They're the same frame style but a slightly different color.

CSUN headshot 2023

I want to devote a short segment to gratitude for my shoes. Honestly, I don't know how many miles are on the current shoes I own, but I do think it's time to retire the Ariel 20s. It's also time to let go of the Ghost 13s that I got from Poshmark. The reason is that I can feel my toe hitting the end of the shoe. It's actually uncomfortable and after a day of wearing them, I feel my toenail on my big toe hurts.

Ariel 20 and Ghost 13

I have to be very frugal, and I hate throwing things away that aren't completely obliterated. However, I don't want a massive pile of shoes by the door that I'm afraid to throw away.
  • June 2024 grey green Ariel 20 via Amazon = $92
  • November 2024 grey green Ariel 20 via Amazon = $106.33
  • March 2024 black/grey/white Ariel GTS 23 via Fleet Feet Encino = $160
  • August 2024 Grey/Black/Pink Ariel GTS 23 via Amazon = $119.95
  • February 2025 New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 via Fleet Feet = $140.00
  • April 2025 Ariel GTS 24 COCONUT / CHATEAU / PORTABELLA via Amazon = $160
  • August 2025 Ariel GTS 24 EBONY / BLACK / WHITE via Fleet Feet = $160
  • August 2025 Ariel GTS 24 MERCURY / EBONY / SWEET LAVENDER via Fleet Feet = $160
So I think I'm feeling okay about this now, seeing that I've had the Ariel 20s for a year and I still love them, and I had two other pairs in the intervening time, which I didn't love, probably because they were the wrong size. So I will likely want to buy more shoes around the holidays or afterwards (before the marathon). I actually hate the New Balance shoes. My feet hurt so much the day after I wear them. Like they're comfortable but not supportive. I understand that some people might want a lightweight shoe, but I prefer a supportive shoe that is heavier and more durable.

I had a really good summer. We did a lot of decluttering, and I'm preparing to sell some items at the consignment sale. I did a lot of cleaning. I didn't do a lot of running. June, especially, but also July, were light on miles. But the goal I had set for the year (2 miles per day), I have already met and surpassed.

2025 mileage tracker as of August
Goal achieved!

I had an episode where my blood pressure surged. My doctor says it could be because of stress or excessive sodium. I came across the video below that discusses exactly the problem I've been having with histamine. It's so helpful to see this type of content, so I don't feel gaslighted. Gaslit?

Looking forward to a new season with the LA Road Runners. Guessing the Santa Monica Classic (which I'm not running) is in 2 weeks.🌟 Orientation Sunday is 9/14 🌟 First Sunday of the season 9/21. I do feel like I've been doing my base building starting in July and continuing in August so I will be ready to get back in season. My run club that I oversee was a non-starter for this session. I'm not super optimistic about the Oct-Dec session either, since the holidays occupy many of those weekends, but we'll see if there's any interest.

The Disneyland Halloween half is also about 2 weeks away. I'd like to go down to Anaheim for a meet-up with the Run Fit Mama herself, Kristin Wentworth, troop 486 leader. Next week is World Princess Week, which is a holiday made up by Disney Parks. There are daily themes that have been set forth by Crowned Athletics.

https://www.runfitmama.net/trainingprograms/core-workout-plan-cinderella-royal-core-7j8s6

https://www.crownedathletics.com/blogs/crowned-connections

If you interact with each day's social media post, or for an extra entry, share a photo of yourself, you might win a Crowned Athletics set. Here's my loose plan for which princess goes with each day's theme. Depending on how you feel about the Disney movies, you might assign a different princess with each trait: creativity, strength, kindness, grace, and bravery.

Mon 8/25 - Creativity

   Rapunzel / Tangled

Tiana / Princess and the Frog

Raya / and the Last Dragon

Tues 8/26 - Strength

   Luisa / Encanto

   Elsa / Frozen

   Moana

Wed 8/27 - Kindness

   Snow White

   Cinderella

   Ariel / Little Mermaid

Thu 8/28 - Grace

   Mulan

   Aurora / Sleeping Beauty

Belle / Beauty and the Beast

Fri 8/29 - Bravery

   Merida / Brave

   Jasmine / Aladdin

   Pocahontas

So I want to put together five outfits. Monday, I can wear my purple jumper and call that Tangled. Tuesday, I could wear my Powerful Hermana set. On Wednesday, I could wear my mermaid skirt / visor / tank top from Sparkle Athletic. Thursday, I teach two labs, so I'm not sure how I could represent any of those princesses, but the jumper I have to wear that isn't already taken is slate grey with a red shirt underneath. I could run in my red Arabian Nights top with the Poisoned Heart Villain athletic skort. Friday, I could wear my green jumper and my Changed Fate set.

And finally: Monday 9/1 is Labor Day and also the kickoff to the RFF Cinderella Royal Core program. The fun thing is to go out and get a Cinderella latte, which is a pumpkin spice latte with a half pump pumpkin sauce and a half pump white mocha. In fact, I'm heading out now to pick up these sauces so that we can make it here at home.

https://athome.starbucks.com/recipe/homemade-pumpkin-spice-syrup
I bought this but it's taking ages to arrive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D1TX4TL6

I'll end here. It feels like there's more to say. I wanted to do a quick check-in before the semester starts to have at least one post for August. I'm at peak optimism at the moment.

CdM Scenic 5k 2025 Race Report

This year's CdM Scenic 5k was a total last-minute decision. My husband decided to get hotel rooms for us and for my Mother-in-law for her birthday. It turned out to be a total bummer because right after we registered for ALL the races for the 2025-26 season, including the CdM, I found out that my pay was about to be drastically cut. It felt so tragic to know that the money was already spent and we couldn't get it back. We were living like millionaires and about to be collecting the salary of a grad student. But anyhow, here is the race report:

The event itself: Where? How long? When? Weather?

We stayed at the Newport Beach Marriott Bayview for two nights. With parking and everything and paying for two rooms, the total cost was almost $1500.00. Staggering. The weather was good, as expected, cool and humid, overcast for the race morning. The course was the same as previous years, but we decided to walk it. I had registered Albert for the kids race, but his grandparents wanted to spend the morning with him so he didn't end up running. It turned out to be okay because somebody misplaced the box of medals and nobody got one.

Course description and evaluation of event logistics

There were plenty of port-a-potties and there was even an tiny gear check which I used because I didn't want to run in my longsleeved shirt but I also didn't want to toss it. I started with the men's race because I didn't want to wait around and that was kind of bad because now it looks like I ran SUPER fast. I noticed that I had a super fast time for a previous year, so it must have been something I've done before. If you register for the women's race, it assumes your start time was the women's gun time, so it only records your finish time.

How did you train for the event

As it was last year, there are a lot of runners in this community that are strong and fast. It was fun to get passed by the first women and the other super fast ladies. I did run across the Goldenrod bridge because there were fast women behind me and I was warmed up by that point and I wanted it to look like I was running in the photos. I didn't really train. I was trying to enjoy my "off-season." I have since been evaluated by my sister and she said I have a weak hamstring, weak glute, and a strong hip flexor. As a result, my adductor is overcompensating to take the load off the pelvic floor. She said I also probably have a tight back (erector spinae). So she recommended working on my pelvic floor and cleared me to start running again on June 28.

Gear and Nutrition

I don't remember what I ate before the race, but we brought a bunch of food for the weekend. I don't think we ate out at all. We went to downtown Disney after the race. I wanted to buy a photo frame and Mike wanted to get a coffee. It was good to do some active recovery. I wore my Crowned Athetics set from Powerful Hermana for the race and no regrets it was perfect.

Specific experiences

We tried running with intervals (Tabata) but my husband didn't end up liking that. I tried to share my earloop headphones, with each of us having one, but he was not a fan.

Finish and associated emotions

We crossed the finish line together holding hands. It felt like this was the first race of the 2025-26 season. I've registered Mike for a bunch of races this year, so I'm looking forward to bringing him with me across many more finish lines.

Overall evaluation of the event

Overall, the finish line food did not disappoint. We got to eat overlooking the Coronal del Mar state beach. The air was so fresh and clean. All the tables were occupied by the time we finished, but we found a bench near the gear check which is where we sat last year too.

Budget

Registration $39.07 for Albert, $55.25 for Kayla and $55.25 for Mike
Downtown Disney Parking at Gardenwalk $8
Coffee at the Disneyland Hotel $12.40
Parking at CdM State Beach day before race $25.65. Race day parking is free.
World of Disney photo frame $37.70
Room #1 $680.66 for 2 nights
Room #2 $795.82 for 2 nights
$1749.42 total

We did end up using the pool at the hotel, and the jacuzzi. The pool there is half sunny and half shady, you can swim under the hotel. The hot tub is in a sunroom that has windows but it is fully shaded. It feels very spa-like with loungers and umbrellas and cabanas.

sparkle squad

I am writing this post as I have decided that I will not renew my Sparkle Squad membership. If you're interested in joining, membership opens starting JUNE 10th.

The first sparkle skirt I got was the minnie mouse one. I saw that the red with white polka dots skirt was in a sparkle skirt "starter kit" and I was horrified to see that I was so basic.

20240805_081037

I also dorked out with the compression socks, which were also part of the cringy "starter kit." Next I got the magical shapes skirt, which I thought would be perfect for Disneyland.

20240807_084313 (1)

Then I started collecting the sparkly ones. I got this brilliant idea to have my sisters dress up as the three fairies from Sleeping Beauty. And this is the best picture I got of all 3 of us together.

20240714_113913

Then I joined the sparkle squad and had the opportunity to buy a bunch of skirts for a low price. There is always a sparkle squad signature skirt for each year.

20240901_110122

I also got the visor with the reflective detail. I got an extra one and gave it to my MIL for Christmas. I got a lightning visor, too. I got a Tinkerbell visor as well and a mermaid visor.

20240914_084457

I got one tank top that says "strong women make waves" in advance of Kamala Harris winning the election; my hopes were high for a minute there.

20240727_090607

I like this Encanto skirt. I have no idea why I don't wear it more often. I also love this Be Awesome trucker hat. I wear it so often and get lots of compliments about it.

20240803_080114(0)

The squad had some fun dress-ups to celebrate the summer Olympics. I got a gold sparkle skirt and many others from Poshmark (used). The squad facebook group also offered used skirts and visors. I found a lot of calf sleeves and some shwings on Poshmark too.

20241214_164423

I got the snowflake skirt for the Holiday Half, and then I think I tried to stop buying sparkle skirts. I have so many, and I rarely wear them. The reason is that they're kind of unnecessary. But I still want to collect more because I'm silly and love collecting stuff.

I did get the checkered flag skirt because we already had some Lightning McQueen t-shirts from a Halloween costume, and I thought it would go well with the Lightning visor I already had. But again, I haven't even worn it yet.

There were other elements to the squad membership. Like there were a ton of Elfster swaps that happened. There was a pumpkin swap, a sock swap, a friendship bracelet swap, and a Valentine's day card exchange, a sticker swap. But it felt like a membership (that you pay for) to a club that gives you opportunities to buy more stuff throughout the year. I did friend a bunch of people on instagram. I've written previously about the components of the Sparkle Squad that I do think were a great idea. Besides the follow train and the spirit days, we were encouraged to:
  • share BRAND/ AMBASSADOR discounts
  • share race discounts or coupon code
  • ask for the Traveling Squad Unicorn Necklace
  • download and share Accountability trackers in Canva
So I will say farewell to the squad. Thank you for the inspiration and best of luck in the 2025-26 season. I had already decided not to renew this membership, but now that CSUN has offered me WAY less classes, it's a necessity for me to cut out any and all unnecessary spending for the foreseeable future until things improve for us financially. And this post is one that I started writing on April 22nd and just now finished, so that's a 6-week delay! Gorsh. We've been busy.

10 things I have learned from being a Disney mom

It is rare for me to have an original thought these days. Even less likely is that I actually write it down. And further, following up on that thought is the rarest event—like seeing a unicorn. Speaking of magical, I wanted to formalize some things Disney has taught me. These lessons translate into other areas of my mom life, so I wanted to share them in a list format.

1. On time is late. Early is on time. Way early is best.

For Disneyland, I love doing rope drop. The first hour of the day is the most efficient. You want to be there as early as possible. If there's a virtual queue, join it. This extends to registering for after school programs, summer camps, marathons, whatever. Find out when the registration opens and know exactly what you want to purchase beforehand. Have your credit card ready and check out quick!

2. Having a magical day is your responsibility. Make a plan. Do your research.

Coming to the park with your top three already decided is really helpful, like what attractions and experiences are on your bucket list. This applies generally to prioritizing your life. You can be happier if you know what your goals are and celebrate when you achieve them. I'm not saying obsess over every single thing, but you don't want to be feeling FOMO when that holiday parade you saw last year just happened yesterday because you forgot to plan this year.

3. Bundle and save, but don't sweat the spending. If you are on a budget, use gift cards to limit your spending.

Buying in bulk at Disney isn't a thing, but you can save money with an annual pass (magic key). You can also save by purchasing a promotional 3-day ticket with flexible dates. Waiting until promotions are available will save you money in the long run. I'm not into unlimited spending, but I'm more of a 50-50 strategy. Bring 50% of the calories you plan to consume and plan to buy the other 50% while in the park. Same with toys. We try to stick to a $100 budget for each park day. We've used gift cards to restrict kiddo's spending too. I'm doing reverse budgets for our runcations to see how much we spend; that way, we can make a plan for 2025.

4. Bring enough hats and sunglasses for everyone. Make a packing list and stick to it.

Prepared is armed. If you forget a hat, you'll be paying extra $$ for a hat in the park that is more expensive than it has any business being. Likewise, with sunglasses, even if the day starts out grey, it will probably get sunny by the afternoon. Being outside all day leads to eye strain and fatigue. The best idea is a one-to-one ratio of sun hats and sunglasses to people in your party. This goes for any function like a beach day or a hike.

5. Stay ready so you don't have to stress while getting ready.

We have a corner where we keep our suitcases, park bags, toiletry bags, and diaper bags all packed. We copy and paste from previous packing lists and check off items as they are loaded into bags, which are loaded into the car. We keep track of when we leave the house, get to the parking structure, and get to the park. That way, we will know next time if it's worth leaving sooner or if we can try leaving later, and we don't stress about it. We even load up the car the night before so that in the morning we can just make coffee, get dressed, and walk out the door.

6. Comfortable over cute every time.

If you have two pairs of shoes, choose the more comfortable one. Don't even think of wearing something new that you haven't worn before for an extended period of time. Consider bringing a poncho if it's raining. It's not cute, but you'll enjoy the day more if you're not stuck in wet clothes. Make sure you have a pocket for your phone that is easily accessible because you'll need it often and quickly to capture those magical moments.

7. Cast members will move your stroller. It will not remain in the exact location where you parked it. Do not panic. Personalize it.

One of the best things we did was to get a stroller sign with our name on it. When you get enough different strollers in one place, the odds of someone else having the exact same model as you are finite. You need to be able to find your stroller when it's not where you left it, and you don't want anyone walking off with yours accidentally. This could be extended to any piece of luggage for travel. Also this can be extended to life in general, it won't always go to plan. Remain calm.

8. Any moment is perfect for a sing-along, parade or dance party.

Leave your inhibitions at home. This is the time to make memories with your kiddo. Sing out loud if you know the words. March along with Mickey and friends. Dance in the street. Seize the day. Nobody cares if you look ridiculous. Just have fun and be in the moment. The biggest thing kiddo says is Mommy stop looking at your phone. So if you can, just be immersed in what's happening right now.

9. Calories don't count when you're walking all day.

We typically walk 7 miles or so in the parks. That's about 400 extra calories. Yes, I know Disney treats can be very caloric but as long as you stick to your budget, there shouldn't be too many extra calories involved. Enjoy what you do eat. Don't worry about it. Choose something fun and memorable that you can't get elsewhere.

10. A kiss goodnight is sweet.

I don't know how people stay all day until the nighttime events. I think I've only seen one night parade. But I think this is one of the nicest things about the parks, in concept. To say goodnight with music and fireworks. Or a dancing fountain. Or projections set to music that tells a story. I think this can be generally extended to parenting. Kind of like the saying, "don't go to bed angry." Kiss and make up. Go ahead and apologize for losing your temper at 2pm when you were dehydrated, sunburned, and exhausted. Tell a bedtime story.

Everything we program into our little ones is stored in their amazing brains. I find it fascinating to see what pours out of my kiddo. I can see that those long days and nights of investment are already starting to pay dividends. Albert is an impressive storyteller. He remembers Disneyland and wants to go back.

Mission Inn Run 2024 Race Report

The event itself: Where? How long? When? Weather?

The weather was good. It was about 55 degrees at the start and around 70 degrees at the finish, not too windy. Mt. Rubidoux shaded a good part of the trail, and the residential neighborhoods and parks had a nice amount of shade from mature trees. The 10k started at 7:45 a.m., and I was done by 9:10 a.m. It was enough time to stretch, cool down, and eat breakfast before the kids' race started at 10 a.m.

Course description and evaluation of event logistics

Downtown through a park, on a bike path, along another park, through residential, back through downtown. Plenty of potties, a simple start and finish line, and no waves at the start.

How you trained for the event

I followed a mixture of the Fit4Mom 10k training plan, the LA Roadrunners LA Marathon training plan, the Jeff Galloway runDisney half marathon training plan, and the Dumbo Double Dare training plan for the Disneyland race. I did observe a taper week before this race. I also focused on nutrition, hydration, and electrolytes in the week leading up to the run. I started to add hills and speed work 4 weeks before race day.

Your gear and nutrition

I had two cups of coffee two hours before the run. I ate a banana and Rx bar 30 minutes before my run. I drank an electrolyte drink about 1 hour before the race. I wore my Nathan Trail Mix waist belt to carry my Gu. I used the toilet about 20 minutes before the race started. I ate one Gu at mile 2 and another Gu at mile 4. Both had no caffeine. I drank some of my water with my Gu and some of the water ended up on my head, arms, legs, and chest.

Conversations you had

Dressing like Tinkerbell was a great idea. I had Disney Hits blasting on my Muzen, and people sang along. People were cheering Go Tink! It was excellent. I met a lady who was training for the Dumbo. She had hurt her foot, so she wasn't running that day. Lots of people started talking about the Disney races when they saw me. I saw a man who was wearing a Dopey 2025 shirt.

Your finish and associated emotions

Somewhere between mile 5 and 6, I started to run out of gas. I considered walking and giving up. I started thinking, how can you think you can finish a marathon if you can't even finish a 10k and I almost started crying. I just wanted the race to be over and for my family to come pick me up. But then we got to downtown, and many people were cheering. It gave me a kick of energy to finish the last half mile. My playlist got to "You'll Be in My Heart," I thought about my run club, and they carried me when my legs were tired. I felt like they were with me. Also, two dozen high school cheerleaders were yelling Go Tinkerbell!!!!! That inspired me to run through the finish line.

Your overall evaluation of the event

Overall, I loved staying at the Mission Inn and running the race. We parked the car and didn't need it. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance.

Bigger and Smaller Races

I have to admit, the number of runners in the Santa Monica Classic freaked me out. It was so crowded I almost had a panic attack right before the race started. It got me thinking about how many runners registered or finished each of the races I've already done and the races I have upcoming.

An example of a smaller race is the Corona del Mar Scenic 5k, which has a very hometown feel. The starting line is a simple balloon arch. There are no fireworks.
  • CdM Scenic 5k = 1,010
    • Men's - 601
    • Women's - 409
A few others with a hometown feel I used to do that I really liked were
  • Glendale Downtown Dash 5k = 1,033
  • Riverside Raincross 5k = 591
  • A Run Through Redlands Half = 476
    • 10k - 802
    • 5k - 1,731
Getting into larger races, you have the three events leading up to the LA Marathon. Together these events make up the Triple 5k Tour of LA / Conquer LA Challenge.
  • Santa Monica Classic 5k/10k - 2415 + 3046 = 5,461 (race is in September)
  • Rose Bowl Half = 9,207 (race is in January)
    • 5k - 1,632
  • LA Marathon = 20,475 (race is in March)
    • LA Big 5k - 6,545
Students Run LA is a program for students in public schools to train alongside their teachers to run the LA Marathon. The Holiday Half Marathon is part of their race schedule.
Run Riverside County Challenge
  • Mission Inn Run = 3,950 (race is in October)
    • 5k - 2040
    • 10k - 1091
    • Half - 819
  • Citrus Heritage Run Half = 516 (race is in January)
    • 10k - 492
    • 5k - 805
  • Palm Desert Half = 541 (race is in February)
    • 5k - 599
Thinking of other glamorous events that I may want to do in the future:
  • La Jolla Half Marathon = 3,568 (race is in May)
    • Starts at the Del Mar Fairgrounds - Finishes at La Jolla Cove and this has been on my radar since 2013
  • Run Malibu Half = 2,763 (race is in November)
    • 5k - 1,509
  • Mountains 2 Beach Marathon = 1,689 (race is in April) in Ventura
    • Half = 1,544
    • 10k = 192
    • 5k = 174
  • Ventura Marathon = 977 (race is in February)
    • Half = 1,691
  • Malibu Moves (race is in October)
  • Seaside Marathon (race is in May) in Ventura
    • 12th annual will be in 2025
  • Valencia Half Marathon (race is in June)
  • Pride of the Valley 5K (run is in August) in Baldwin Park
    • 29th Annual was in 2024
  • Mardi Gras Madness 5K/10K in Valencia (run is in February 2025)
    • 15th annual will be 2025
  • Chinatown Firecracker 5k/10k (race is in February)
    • 47th annual in 2025
  • Hope the Mission - Drumstick Dash LA (race is on Thanksgiving)
I'll make a special category for trail races, which I think are great for some people but maybe not for me unless someone special talked me into doing it.
  • Red Rock Rumble (trail race in June)
  • Chesebro Half Marathon in Thousand Oaks (trail race in April)
  • Catalina Island Half Marathon & 10k (trail race is in November)
  • Moorpark Mammoth Run (trail race is in October)
    • 11th Annual in 2024
  • Verdugo Mountains 10k (race is in May)
  • Griffith Park Trail Marathon Relay (race is in June)
SoCal Triple Crown is a race series in San Diego. I've been wanting to get back down to San Diego and I asked my mother-in-law for recommendations and she suggested the San Diego Half but I'm not sure which one of these she was referring to. She said it was a point-to-point run where you start at Point Loma (a high elevation) and you finish at Balboa Park (a low elevation).
  • GOVX San Diego Half Marathon = 3,355 (race is in March)
  • America's Finest City Half Marathon = 3,631 (race is in August)
    • This has been on my wish list since 2012
  • Carlsbad Marathon = 997 (race is in January)
    • Half = 3,411
    • 5k = 1,166
    • Double Down Challenge is 5k + half (16.2 miles)
Beach Cities Challenge is a race series in Orange County which my nephew recently mentioned that he would like to complete. I've done the OC Half but not any of the other ones.
  • Surf City Marathon = 1,544 (race is in February)
    • Half = 8,341
    • 5k = 3,587
  • OC Marathon = 2,916 (race is in May)
    • Half = 9,589
  • Long Beach Marathon = 2,511 (race is in October)
Then you have runDisney races, which are just on a whole other level. We don't have the Tinkerbell Half marathon weekend (which was a women's empowerment event) anymore but we do have two race weekends here in SoCal now.
  • Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon = 11,162 (race is in September)
    • 10k = 7,802
  • Disneyland Half Marathon = 11,186 (race is in January/February)
    • 10k = 6,601

Park Delights with Little Ones

Favorite chill spots at Disneyland Park

While you are waiting for rope drop, mobile order something to pick up later in the day at Jolly Holiday. They sell out of some treats early!

If you Rope Drop Fantasyland, you can do all these things in the first hour

Carousel

Snow White

Pinocchio

Mr. Toads

Dumbo

Casey Jr Circus Train

Canal boats

Mad tea party

Alice in Wonderland

Outdoor nap spot

Between Fantasyland and Frontierland. There's a Guest Relations kiosk. Great people watching. There's a shaded bench for you to sit and great ambient noise.

New Orleans Square

Harbour galley - Soup in bread bowl, cookies

Tiana's palace - open 10am-9pm

Mint julep bar (Beignets) - open 8am-10pm

I love the restrooms here. There is a drinking fountain you can use to refill water bottles

You could ride Haunted Mansion or Pirates

Pirate Lair on Tom Sawyer Island

Mobile order something to eat and take the ferry over to the island

There are restrooms and a bottle filling station but no food (bring your own)

Rivers of America

I’ve never seen Fantasmic! but there are some dining packages

Mark Twain Riverboat

Sailing Ship Columbia

Davey Crockett Explorer Canoes

Ship to shore marketplace = Breakfast chimichanga and frozen lemonade

There's a little view of the river from the marketplace where there used to be tables. The fresh cool air coming off the river is really nice to stop and snack.

Frontierland

Restrooms at Rancho del Zocalo, but there’s usually a long line there

The chill thing to do here is watch the ducks

Albert got a kick out of playing with the cannon

You can find a shady bench

We’ve never eaten at River Belle Terrace, Cafe Orleans, Plaza Inn, Blue Bayou. Pretty much any place that requires reservations.

We’ve never eaten at the Golden Horseshoe, but I heard they have a root beer flight right now which sounds really fun

Royal Theater

we’ve never done, I just don’t think Albert has enough patience to sit for a show

If you bring quarters, you can do the shooting gallery at Frontierland and some other fun stuff in Adventureland inside the Bazaar.

Hanging around the Hub

Food from Quick Service / Food Carts

Maurice's Treats - open 8am-9pm

Churros near sleeping beauty castle - opens 8:30 am

Little Red Wagon Corn dogs - opens 8am - midnight

Pretzels near big thunder MTN - opens 11am - 11 pm

You can ride the Main Street Vehicles.

Toontown

Cafe Daisy

Bottle filling station near Chip & Dale gadget go coaster

Also low stimulation cave and picnic area way at the back of Toontown

These restrooms are so crowded

You can sometimes see characters like Goofy and Pete

We’ve never waited in line to see Mickey and Minnie at their house(s)

Disneyland Railroad

Good for an afternoon nap

Or if it’s really hot, we take a nap inside the waiting area of Great Moments with Mr Lincoln

Main St characters (we usually catch them in the afternoon before the 3:30PM parade)

We get popsicles if it’s hot from the food carts on Main St (strawberry sugar-free) and sit at the train station. We get popcorn from the cart for the walk back to the hotel

Troubadour Tavern

(near Toontown and the Fantasyland Theater) has good, kid-friendly food

Baked potato

Chicken nuggets and mac

Prince and Princess restrooms (we love these)

Adventureland

Swiss Family Robinson treehouse, be prepared to climb it at least 6 times

Tiki Room + Dole Whip (you have to mobile order it)

Jungle cruise

Bengal bbq You can mobile order and then sit inside, it’s shady

Restrooms are closer to the Tiki Room and castle

Tomorrowland

(this is pretty at night when all the neon lights are on)

Autotopia

Galactic Grill (good to mobile order and sit outside)

Pizza Planet (one pasta dish can feed two people for sure), Albert does a good nap here too

Inside the restaurant is dark and air-conditioned & there’s ambient sounds that put him to sleep

Nemo

Monorail

Buzz Light-year

Restrooms are behind Autotopia and usually not crowded

Small World

you can get a lightening lane for this I think

Parade - find out when it is and plan to be somewhere to avoid or watch it.

King & Queen restrooms near Alice in Wonderland. This is my fav parade-watching spot

Toddler in front of Small World in Disneyland

Main St near Tomorrowland

Baby care center - you can get diapers here if you run out. They will give you a sticker. If your child gets lost, this is where you can find them.

Silhouette studio - 8am- midnight

Usually we get ice cream at Gibson Girl on the way out

Galaxy's Edge

is another great nap spot. It has ambient noise that puts my kid out!

If he’s in the stroller and getting fussy, we get a blue milk and walk through Batuu until he falls asleep. I think you can also watch the fireworks from back here now. You can mobile order food and drinks here that’s good for adults. Kids might not like it because the food is all weird

Droid depot the robots will interact with your kid.

Milk stand

Ronto roasters

Docking Bay 7

Water bottle refill stations at both restrooms, rarely are these restrooms too crowded

Critter Country

*I think most of this is closed at the moment

But I wanted to say that the Hungry Bear was great for kids, we enjoyed sitting on the second level overlooking the train, the riverboats, and they have some ambient nature sounds that are very relaxing. I love the bathrooms on the ground level, closer to the river.

Favorite chill spots at Disney California Adventure Park

Fiddler, fifer & practical cafe (Starbucks) in Carthay Circle.

We love getting a snack while waiting for rope drop.

Paradise Gardens Park

Rope drop The Little Mermaid and ride it for a while. They will let you circle around again and again if there’s no line. The line gets long later in the day, so we usually do this one first.

There's a cappuccino cart near the bridge to Sanfransokyo square if you need a coffee

Pixar Pier

restrooms by Paradise Garden Grill and Goofy’s Sky School are okay

Jesse’s Carousel (there are nice restrooms behind the ride)

Toy Story Midway Mania (if you can get a Lightning Lane)

Pixar Pal A Round (do the NON SWINGING)

Sanfransokyo Square

The Bakery Tour - 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Get a Baymax or Mickey Vampire Bread and feed the ducks

Restaurants open at 10:30 AM - Aunt Cass Cafe takes mobile orders

They have mac & cheese in a bread bowl that is kid-friendly and big enough to share

The Baby Care Center is next to Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop and across from The Bakery Tour. There’s a nice spot to change a diaper, a family restroom with a tiny potty, high chairs for feeding, etc.

The bathrooms here have a water bottle filling station

Grizzly Peak

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail - make sure mom & dad have on sturdy shoes or be prepared to lose your child for a while. This is a ropes course with lots of stairs. Great to get wiggles out.

Our best nap spot in DCA is in the Grand Californian Hotel Lobby

It’s cool and quiet and pretty. You can get snacks right there at the Grand Californian Great Hall Cart or you can get food from the GCH Craftsman Grill. You can order food from the poolside GCH Craftsman Bar even if you’re not a hotel guest. But that’s going to take longer.

There are so many little courtyards within the hotel grounds for kids to toodle around. It’s shady most of the day. You can access this from Downtown Disney too so it’s a great spot to know about whether you have a park reservation or not.

You do have to go through security to re-enter the park from the hotel but it’s worth it.

There’s a water bottle filling station in the hotel gym.

Another great nap spot is the walking path behind Grizzly River Run. Apparently it used to be the smoking area, but it’s not anymore. There is a unique sound of the flume ride that provides enough white noise to get a kid to sleep. Plus the humidity from the water ride makes that area significantly cooler. You can park the stroller on a bridge over the splash zone and whoever is not sleeping can watch people doing down the drop

Sometimes you can find a photo-op with Goofy or Pluto near the airplane near Soarin’

There’s a really quiet spot near the restrooms across from Soarin and Smokejumpers

It’s like a closed alleyway that goes nowhere but there’s a bench there. Great spot for breastfeeding or eating a popsicle and avoiding the crowds and noise

It’s between the gift shop and the restrooms.  I think there might be some lockers there.

Going back through Carthay Circle and down Hollywood Blvd

Hit up the Disney Jr Dance Party. It’s quite loud but short and fun for the kids

Animation Academy is a fun place to chill out. It’s cool and dark. I’ve never got Albert to nap in there but it feels like it could work for some kids. You do have to park your stroller and leave it outside, so that’s a drawback.

We've never done Turtle Talk with Crush but that's also in this building

Turning the corner to Sunset Blvd

It’s a good spot to watch any DCA parades.

There’s a Shawarma Cart that you can get breakfast or lunch. Really yummy

There’s an open courtyard behind the shawarma cart and the Hyperion theater that sometimes isn’t used for anything. It’s a nice place to sit and eat and you can sometimes find shade there

Avenger’s Campus

We usually get some food at Pym test kitchen and watch a show at Avenger’s Headquarters

Black Widow and Black Panther do a thing on top of the building near the quinjet

Spiderman does a thing at Web Slingers, it’s short but the kids get a kick out of it

Starlord does a thing in front of mission break out, a dance-off

The Ancient Sanctum is a garden that is nice and quiet (low stimulation). I heard Dr. Strange used to do a magic show there but I don’t think it’s running now. Still nice to see

The restrooms are by Web Slingers, but they tend to have long lines

Cars Land

It’s hard to love Cars Land because my kid always wants to buy something and he’s not big enough to ride the Radiator Springs Racers

If it’s winter, I try to do Cars Land at sunset because you get to see the neon come on and people do a funny dance to the Sha-boom song. It’s worth trying to time it that way.

If it’s hot we eat inside Flo’s V8 Cafe.

The tables and theming are really cute and the food is definitely kid-friendly.

The restrooms are there in Flo’s but sometimes they have really long lines.

I think there’s a drinking fountain or water bottle filling station there.

Cozy Cone Motel

is hard to navigate but they have some fun snacks

Cone 1 = churros

Cone 2 = ice cream

Cone 3 = queso (mac & cheese in a bread cone)

Cone 4 = chimichangas and frozen adult beverages

Cone 5 = popcorn

You have to know which cone you want in order to mobile order food, but it’s worth it.

Definitely mobile order because if you do walk-up it can take over 10 minutes for your food

It’s worth waiting in line for the photo op with Mater, Cruz or Lightning

You can ride Mater's Junkyard Jamboree or Luigi's Rollicking Roadsters but they're very jerky

Hollywood Backlot

It’s nice if they have entertainment on the Hollywood Backlot Stage

That whole area is chill because there’s only Monster’s Inc as a ride.

We usually get food from the Studio Catering Company (a food truck)

There are sometimes tables right there or you can sit in the bleachers for the stage

I like Mickey’s Philharmagic. It’s dark in there and the show is music so the kids love it

There are some little tables right there and that area is mostly shaded

We usually hit Trolley Treats on Buena Vista St to get some Churro Toffee for the ride home

Night Stuff and Fancy Adult Stuff

If you know anyone with a Magic Key, the magic key terrace is nice

I’m sure you could enjoy dinner at Wine Country Trattoria, but I’ve never eaten there

We’ve never eaten at Carthay Circle Lounge or Lamplight Lounge or Storytellers Cafe

I’ve never seen World of Color, but there are dining packages you can get

For dining reservations, you want to grab those 60 days before your trip and I just never remember. You can ask to be put on a waitlist for walk-up and they may or may not call you

Disneyland Hotel

We love to order the sweet potato fries and sit out by the pool at Tangaroa Terrace

They have low chairs that are good for kids and the music / vibe is nice

I heard the Coffee House at the Disneyland hotel just reopened with a good menu

The Adventure Lawn Gazebo is a great wiggle spot for kiddos. As long as there’s no wedding

Pixar Place Hotel

Small Bytes is a bodega type store

Sketch Pad Cafe is a quick service

Great Maple is a sit-down, I think you need reservations

I've never been to any of these because they've only recently opened.
