Marathon Equipment

20250307_130018

I wanted to write about this because it took me a long time to get it dialed in. The best shirt for me turned out to be the one that was given to me by the LARR. I found that running in tank tops was a recipe for chafing. I also found that full compression socks were too compressive but that calf sleeves were just right. I found that wearing two bras was better than one, but I had to put a massive amount of chamois butter underneath.

The folding hat is amazing when you start out your run in the dark and it gets light later on in the day. Not pictured here is a neck gaiter, which I had left over from the Color Run. The sun sleeves I wore were leftover from my cycling days, but you can find something similar listed below. I think the non-slip grip in the sleeves and in the skort is really key to keeping things in place. The skort never rode up and the sleeves never fell down.

I learned that I had to wear only one headphone at a time and leave the other one charging, to have the batteries last until the end of the race. I learned that my phone wouldn't last 20 miles without the fuel rods. I learned the Feetures ultra-light gave me a blister, but the light was perfect. I put chamois butter all over my feet, in my panty line, armpits, bra line, and inner thighs. I learned that I need to put sunscreen on the tops of my hands. Marathon training aged my skin on my face, neck and hands.

I LOVE the Crowned Athletics Skorts. Seriously, it's one of the biggest game changers in my whole marathon training. The Powerful Hermana sports bra kept riding up, and the band was too compressive. I would have to take it off mid-run because it left me feeling like I was gasping for breath. But for some reason, the Changed Fate sports bra was tight and loose enough to stay put, let me breathe, and not chafe.

summertime

The longest days of the year are here. We are weeks away from the solstice and I feel my energy peaking. Tomorrow is the full strawberry moon.

I have enjoyed filling my time with visiting friends and family. Even though I said I would never volunteer at another consignment sale, I am working tomorrow at Burbank and then skating at Moonlight Rollerway.

Kiddo is becoming a more independent sleeper. It's noticeable. Sometimes he nurses like crazy, sometimes he's just too busy. We put up bunk beds in the house and they're fun but now we have an excess of furniture and we need to downsize again.

I actually got out my sewing machine today.

News and Reviews

Update to Month of Mama. Reviewing items now that I've had a chance to put them into action.

Velvet Disney Ears 10/10
New shoes 10/10
F4M swag 10/10
Zyia running belt 10/10
SheFit bras as swimsuits 10/10
I also got a skirt from Five Below and two bottoms off Amazon. I also got a clip tank from SheFit. I want to see how it works and it was discounted by 50% regularly $45.
CRZ YOGA feeling naked biker shorts. 10" love them. Just ordered 2 pairs of the 8" inseam.

Kindred Bravely Simply Sublime nursing bra 10/10 and bought a second one in the color Twilight.
I do like the KB Bamboo Nursing & Maternity Tank after all. It is breathable and good to nurse in. 8/10. Because after you wash it, it's confusing to turn right-side out. And if you wash the pants more often than the top, they discolor at a different rate.
I wear KB Everyday Lounge Joggers as much as I can when they are clean. Have not really worn KB Bamboo Maternity & Postpartum Lounge Shorts but it hasn't gotten super hot yet. Maybe I just need to hang them where I can see them. 8/10

Okay so I put on the KB Eleanora Bamboo Maternity & Nursing Lounge Dress in Oatmeal Stripe today and it was not good. The sleeve length was not right. The midsection hugged all my rolls. The pockets didn't lay right. I kinda looked like a pig in a blanket even wearing Spanx underneath. I'm gonna offer it to my sister. 0/10.

Latched Mama floral nursing hoodie. 10/10 Love.
LM Blissful lounge nursing dress. 12/10. I live in this.
Printed pleated nursing dress. 10/10
LM Midi Nursing Tank Dress 10/10. Thin and breathable, comfortable for play. OMG if they were in stock I would buy a second.
OMG what could I say about each of these items? I love them so much and I love myself for buying them. It has elevated my summer wardrobe 1,000,000% and makes it simple and quick to pull a lewk together. They hide all the flaws. They keep me cool. They are perfect for discreely breastfeeding my toddler. LOL as if such a thing exists.
LM Printed V-Neck Nursing Tee 2.0 I am actually obsessed. I would live in this. Flattering. Easy to breastfeed in a carrier. Great for walking around Disneyland. I bought 2 more when they were on sale for $15 off.

Goodr sunglasses have been a big hit with me and kiddo. The OGs are good for me and the BFGs are perfect for hubbie.

I treated our family to the Fit4Mom Gather meal plan, since it was half-price for May (regularly $17.99). It is a 30-day recipe book with a calendar, snack suggestions and shopping lists. There were some mistakes or ambiguity but I forgive that because it did give me lots of healthy snack ideas for kiddo and some new recipes that were quick, easy and yummy. Gather: A 30-Day Family Nutrition - it is worth full price. I feel like it was more toddler-friendly than Mashup Mom. We got our groceries at ALDI and it was on average $16.27 per day. But if you consider it is HEALTHY and FRESH then it's worth it.

So we have been sitting in the parking lot of the Discovery Cube for an hour because kiddo fell asleep on the way over and I didn't have the heart to wake him up. Thank goodness I filled up the gas tank. Too bad gas is so expensive. This nap is costing us $$$.

Heading to the Color Run this weekend. Hope it is super fun for all 3 of us. Debating whether to bring the stroller on the run or let kiddo walk. He is super into walking now. Got my suitcases out to pack for my Nebraska trip. I know, it's 4 weeks away, but weeks go by fast when you're looking after a toddler every day.

Also, I am obsessed with this Think tinted sunscreen, which of course is sold out.

March 2022 thoughts

3/5 - Put kiddo in the silk ring sling for the first time today. Did a haircut and a shower. It was even better than I had hoped. I can't wait to use it this summer in the pool, in the ocean and more often in the shower. Got it used on Poshmark for $60.

3/7 - Even though I take an absurd amount of photos and video of LO, I feel like it's not enough! We had to give our daycare photos of anyone who is authorized to pick up LO and I realized I have so few pics of grandma and auntie. I was watching videos of kiddo and wishing I had more than like 1 every other month. Why do I wait until he is doing something super cute? I just need more!

3/9 - bae has a cough. mama is tired.
"allergies" and Zyrtek. Is he gonna cough for the rest of his life? WTF. He's been coughing since week 1 of December 2021. Like ~15 weeks.

3/11 - I tried to do too much today. Almost started crying on a work Zoom call because I nearly had a panic attack. Trying to balance caring for a sick kid, doing a good job at work, being a good friend / sister / daughter / wife. I wish I could take a Tylenol PM and sleep for 14 hours but I'm still breastfeeding.

3/12 - Man-colds are the bad joke of the universe. LO has been sick all week. I caught it and have been one day behind LO. Now DH has it and he's confined to the bed, taking NyQuil. I feel it's so unfair. I have had to function through it all.

Kiddo was so whiny last night, I strapped him to my back and walked around our condo complex and found every single unit number from 1 up to 129. It was actually a really fun game and saved my sanity.

3/13 - Self-Care Sunday. Woke up at 5:30am. Put DH in charge of LO. Slept 3 hours. Still feel like crap but it was much needed.

I'm working through LO's naps this weekend instead of resting because even though I'm sick too, I know I'll be keeping LO home from daycare during the week and I need this time to make progress on work stuff. But it sucks. My head hurts. I'm coughing. Kiddo is also teething. He's been biting, scratching, whining, refusing to eat... it's been so rough. It's his birthday tomorrow and I think we're just gonna treat it like a normal day and pray that kiddo is better by next weekend when we will have a party with friends and family.

3/15 - I have never wanted to do a primal scream until now. My sister miscarried at 9w 6d. No heartbeat. I'm so freaking sad for her. Aaaaah!

And I can't do a primal scream IRL because I am sick. I am a teacher. I took all my sick leave as maternity w/ my Marchling. If I scream IRL, I will lose my voice and then I won't be able to talk.

She had her D&C today. I wish I could be there but I live 2000 miles away. My other sister is due 3/19 (any day now). I wish I could be there for her too. So much joy and sadness. Aaaaah!

3/21 - 2 year pediatrician visit today was a mixed bag. Kiddo wearing a mask is just not happening. LO doesn't wear hats or hoods so I don't know how a mask is going to work. LO is growing well and walking strong. Dr. said we are doing a good job as parents.

My middle sister had a miscarriage last week at 10 weeks, which was really super sad. My youngest sister is 41 weeks tomorrow. The timing of these events with LO's 2nd bday is filling me with too many feels.

My husband's uncle died on Friday and we just found out today because they didn't want to ruin LO's bday party with bad news. LO's party was on Saturday. MIL was at the party but FIL was a no-show and now we know why.

I'm not whining. I'm on Spring Break which is absolutely fabulous. Celebrating 14 years of marriage next week. This is one of my favorite times of the year: spring!

I have been researching taking LO to Disneyland and had considered going this week or next. But now I understand you need a ticket AND a reservation and the next available isn't until May. So now planning for Summer.

But also I want to go "home" for a few weeks in summer to spend time with sisters / cousins / grandparents. Guess it's not too early to get those plans going.

My kid has insisted on wearing ONE pair of shoes 24/7 since Jan 30th. That's fifty days and fifty nights. And today I realized that my two year old has athlete's foot.

We change his socks at least 2x per day but now I guess we'll be using a cream to treat the fungus and throw away his favorite shoes. The pediatrician said athlete's foot isn't bad, it's toenail fungus that is really hard to treat.

Edit to add: he doesn't have toenail fungus thank goodness

3/19 - Sleep Saturday. Our pediatrician said that night sleep should be uninterrupted. If night nursing 3x per night is happening, then LO should be weaned in order to sleep through the night. He should be consuming 6 oz cows milk during the day, or equivalent dairy intake.

She didn't say that I should stop breastfeeding but that sleep is important and we should be doing everything we can to help him sleep continuously through the night. I don't know what we should be doing other than what we are already doing.

I was just saying to DH this weekend that I would be extremely motivated to wean and get LO into his own bed and room if we were TTC but I'm 41 and we're not trying for another and I haven't got my period yet and it's kinda nice not to buy tampons.

I guess I figure LO will eventually want his own bed and own room and we can absolutely do that when he asks for it. Right now kiddo and I cosleep in a queen bed and DH has his own king bed. DH snores super loud.

3/18 - Feeding Friday. LO's bday party menu was all his favorite things. I've never seen him so happy to sit at a table and eat. Mac & cheese, watermelon, grapes, strawberries, applesauce pouch and goldfish crackers. And mini oreo cookies. There were 6 kids and they all ate at an oversized adult table. My heart melted. I love seeing my kid eat. He's in the 4th percentile for weight, so I just can't help but feed him anything he will actually eat.

I babysat for another kid. Same age as my kid. It was interesting to see how different they were. My kid loves to feed himself. He's really good with a spoon and fork but is picky about what he will eat. This other kid had a bigger appetite and ate a broader range of foods but didn't want anything to do with touching the utensils. He wanted to be spoon-fed. Just interesting to see a different kid.

Our kid loves picking fruit from the garden. I should get some stuff in the ground now. Or make a playdate to do berry you-pick.

3/23 - I feel so late to the party. Tried to look into swimming lessons today for LO and every class is full! The words SOLD OUT are just ringing in my mind and I am having major FOMO.

I think swim lesson enrollment is rolling month-to-month. But just like Disneyland... I have to plan Now for May. I just didn't know.

3/24 - Spring break is giving me life. I have been taking my LO to Fit4Mom workouts and seeing him imitating lunges, high knees, jumping jacks and push-ups is so cute. I am sleeping better after these workouts.

My sister is in labor now, her water broke overnight. I'm beyond excited for LO to gain a new cousin and for my sister to become a mom.

3/27 - I got so upset with my husband today. Last night I called him ungrateful. Today, he got whiny after being at the zoo for 1.5 hours. I told him that he is responsible for planning all weekends in April. Mommy will be visiting local spas. Alone.

I don't think he gets how much work it is being the default parent. I have given him a glimpse of it two weeks ago when LO was sick and DH had to stay home from work Tues/Thurs. DH was so worn out from those days! I feel like he doesn't have enough energy to chase after a toddler.

Right now DH and LO are taking a nap. They have been asleep for nearly 3 hours (from 2-5 pm). What he seems to forget is that LO only sleeps 12 hours in a 24 hour period. LO slept 1 hour in the car on the way to the zoo. This to me means LO will only sleep 8 hours overnight. Which means he will have a wake window from 5pm to 9pm and then wake up at 5am. Who does overnights? Mom.

3/28 - Trying not to get too caught up in social media. Sharenting isn't my gig and I don't aim to be an influencer. I share because I live 2000 miles away from my parents and sisters. And because I love when social media surprises me with happy memories from the past.

TLDR: We had a super fun weekend and I didn't take any pictures.

3/30 - I've been at work for 5 hours now. Working continuously. I feel I've barely made a dent. I was so caught up in planning for and executing LO's birthday party, taking care of him when he was sick, that I am just a whirlwind here at work with no clear TO DO list or priorities. I love my little guy and think about him all the time. I feel parenthood occupies 95% of my brain function.

December 2020 thoughts

I gave LO a pacifier the other day and he played with it happily for about 20 minutes, which is longer than some toys. He put all parts of it in his mouth and chewed. His coordination is so good now, he can manipulate it even though it had no "handle."

I had a dream that I got fired and it made me so happy. Even though we're virtual, in my dream all the students showed up in person. It has been SO HARD. I feel so stressed. DH takes LO out during my class so I don't hear the crying. But otherwise baby is here. If I try to work, LO has taken to screaming at me. If I don't hold him for naps, he only sleeps for 10 minutes.

I used to be on campus 40+ hours per week at 93% of full-time. We always planned for me to keep working until my student loans are repaid, but that's 5 years from now. We had planned to put LO in daycare 3 days per week, which would have cost 1/3 of my salary. Because of COVID we are keeping LO at home instead.

DH is supposed to be "on call" but he still goes to campus 5 days a week and sits in his office blogging, day trading, and doing non-profit work. When he's here, I get upset because he's always falling asleep and not watching or playing with LO. So we end up bickering.

I don't know if what we're doing is best for each of us or not. It's just what is. I don't know what we'll do next semester. It all depends on what classes I'm offered. We're for sure virtual again. Daycare is available. We're just choosing to go without. I hate the circumstances but I love my baby.

We love rain 🌧 https://youtu.be/ajABt8KCho8

I'm still stressed from Monday when I looked at the nutrition facts on the baby's rice cereal. I started feeding rice after my pediatrician shamed me for exclusively breastfeeding for the first 4 months. She said the baby looked pale and I should start giving baby cereal with iron. Yea so I looked at the box and it said serving size 4 tablespoons. The entire box is only 16 servings. One box has been lasting me over a month. Strike 1. Then I looked at the iron. A full serving provides baby 60% of the RDA for iron. Strike 2.

So today I tried feeding the baby like 3 times as much as I normally give him. He's a super slow eater. Like breakfast started at 8am and ended at 11am. WTF? This can't be right.

Albert seemed to be spitting up more lately too after a temporary improvement. Dunno what that's about.

We spent Dec 6th childproofing after a nice breakfast, clean kitchen, doing laundry, going to groom the dog, holiday cards are almost done, maybe we'll hang lights upstairs.

We took LO to look at Xmas lights. DH took an "In-N-Out Day" picture of me and LO. All in all, an epic weekend. I realized that my kitchen is actually my refuge and I WANT to spend more time in there. Planning to bake so many holiday treats this year. Ordered supplies on Amazon so today I am on "package watch."

The March 2020 Bumper group has lots of discussion about TTC which I'm like cool cool cool. Some are happy to be already pregnant again. And I'm like having all these thoughts about miscarriages. For them. They're posting pics of lines on sticks and I'm just thinking how that doesn't mean you're going to get a live baby, but I don't say anything.

I had my son via C-section and I'm 40 years old. Even though I would want another, I don't think it will be possible. So it is hard for me to read about other pregnancy posts. I'm like can't we just keep the group focused on the ones we already have? If you start another, can't you share that with the other Bumper group? We have to put CW and TW on posts about breastfeeding and sleep, why can't all TTC posts go somewhere else?

Then comes one thread about TTC using some [banned term] method to get the gender you want and I have no idea what that is, but it made me pretty upset. I wrote a kind of snarky comment about IVF and genetic testing as a way to get the gender you want. The OP said, "if you can't tell, this is meant to be lighthearted and just for fun." Well I guess I still have some lingering resentment that I didn't have that fun TTC experience.

DH tries to help by napping with LO but when DH is awake, he's always dumping LO into a container and walking away.

Dec 10: I'm so tired today. I'm tired of feeding LO. I'm tired of being behind at work. I'm tired of trying to do everything here at home. I asked DH to watch LO last night after bedtime because I forgot to eat and I was so hungry I couldn't sleep. Pretty much right when I got done eating, LO started crying so I didn't get much of a break. I got a little bit upset with DH last night because we sit on our neighborhood sustainability committee. On a zoom call last night, DH was ignoring LO, sushing him, pushing him out of the frame. It made me feel like LO is at the center of my life but only in the margins of my partner's life. That hurt. DH goes to work outside the home for 5 hours, 5 days a week. I have no idea what he does all that time, he can do whatever he wants. Meanwhile, I have left the house without LO once only for about 3 hours since he was born. Yeah yeah yeah. It was my idea to EBF. I get kind of tired of DH pointing out that it was my idea. I didn't know it would be like this. I know it's temporary, but it's so all consuming. I'm almost done with this semester. Taught 3 classes. Got my schedule for next semester, only 2 classes. So that's good b/c less work but bad b/c less pay. About half what I have been making for the past 7 years. Fuck COVID. I used to teach 5 classes but I took my mat leave in the form of a reduced workload for this semester. I hate doing part-time WFH with no childcare. It's putting strain on my relationship with DH.

Dec 11: I had a mental flashback to when we were all pregnant and worrying about nurseries and packing a hospital bag. It seems both like a long time ago AND yesterday.

Dec 15: I saw a work colleague while doing a socially distanced secret santa dropoff. I haven't seen him since I was 7 months pregnant. So weird.

Dec 18: Wow, T. G. I. F. This was the last week of the semester where I went back to work with a new baby. I'm so glad I will never have to relive this experience ever again. I almost cried yesterday when I finished grading student work. My LO is having so much teething pain. He's been difficult to get to nap during the day and he's having a hard time going down at night. He's biting while nursing so there's that.

Dec 21: We went for a walk last night to look at Christmas lights. DH has a three day week. LO is teething. I can feel uppers coming in. The bottom two erupted together. Not sure what's happening in the upper jaw but it must be painful. Been giving Tylenol infrequently as it can help with naps and bedtime but trying to use it as needed and not as a matter of routine. Aldi unsweetened applesauce was a big hit at lunch yesterday.

I was reflecting on this semester and I was like DAMN. GIRL. YOU. DID. THAT. Great job. Those people's experiences are not like ours. We have our own challenges like really doing all the things and doing them well and not asking for extra time or compensation. I feel motherhood has changed me for the better WRT how I treat my students and I guess I have lost some respect for my childless colleagues who complain about how little time they have.

Got some supplies for sewing 2 quilts. Want to stay productive during lockdown. 1st one is going to be made by cutting up receiving blankets. All flannel pastels. 2nd one is fabric from MIL all navy white and gold with a nautical theme.

The crib quilt I sewed for LO is coming in handy finally. Used it to protect the carpet from spit up at MIL's over Thanksgiving. Also wrap LO in it when he's on my lap listening to bedtime stories. We used to nurse to sleep but between his teething pain and my fear of getting my nipple bit off, we're starting to do storytime until he drifts off.

Definitely spent more than I wanted to at the craft store. I will try to save the receipt and return anything I don't use. Found out I will be working at 50% of my normal schedule for spring. Good News: we can keep going without childcare, spend more time with LO, continue BF. Bad News: we are going to keep going without childcare, no rest, no break, less pay.

We had an awkward Zoom party with our coworkers and LO was super fussy throughout. It was a major struggle even though it was well intended. DH and I work in the same department. He was like: notice how nobody else's kids were on the screen? It's because their spouses were minding them. We didn't have that option.

Dec 28: Just coming here to say that I used our toilet sprayer and shield for the first time today. We cloth diaper part-time. Since we started feeding LO solids, his poops were very plop-able. Today there was a clingy situation and the sprayer worked great. Was it worth $70 to have the sprayer and shield? There are some unanswerable questions in parenthood. I'm no economist, but using it one time only has been pretty unsatisfying. Not that I want to be spraying every day. Once is fine. I have convinced myself that it is our emergency bidet in case the world goes crazy and starts hoarding toilet paper again.

Dare I do the math for the rest of the cloth diaper nonsense I bought? My husband is a big fan of disposable diapers. I prefer cloth because I just hate thinking of those disposable diapers in the landfill. But I don't use most of what I have. Several friends gave me their stashes. Plus I bought some. In the beginning, it was so confusing. Now I keep it simple so I only use flats and covers. I have a ton of pockets and fitteds that I'm not even using.

I must ask my friends who gave me their pockets and fitteds if they will be wanting them back. I have 28 flats and we wash every other day if we don't use any disposables. I will definitely sell the AIOs I bought. I keep holding everything for now to see if our preferences change as LO continues to grow. I have no idea of when we will potty train, hence how much longer we will need all the diaper stuff.

Same goes for homemade purees. Dare I calculate the cost of homemade versus store-bought? I'm not a complete eco-freak. I just like cooking. I enjoy making the purees. But sometimes I wonder: is it worth the time and effort? Is it even worth the time it took me to think about and write this post? I do try to think of our options as "all of the above" and not be too rigid to use a combination of whatever makes sense. COVID restrictions have been so game-changing in the sense that I'm home all day every day so there's really no excuse to not use the CDs and make homemade food. Unless I just don't have the energy. Which happens sometimes.

One thing is for sure... I love my baby. I totally felt overwhelmed by the transition from bottles/BF to purees. Still haven't made the leap to puffs/solids.

Dec 30: Started packing up the Christmas decorations today. It's the only project that seems to make sense right now. LO was super fussy throughout breakfast but then cracking up laughing while watching me dismantle a wreath made of eucalyptus. Silly goose.

If you can fit one large mat in your vehicle/house, I would recommend against the puzzle mat. I am getting pretty tired of constantly rebuilding it when the pieces separate. I wish I had one continuous mat. The fence we have is two of these. I got the idea to fence LO in with my computer since I WFH and it's been great. Here's what it looks like with two gates and two alphabet puzzles: Toddleroo Superyard x2.

I have a 1 year old

Honestly we had a great birthday for Albert. My mom (his grandmother) was here. We had a zoom party for some family and friends. It was safe and simple. We had three kinds of pie for pi day.

It was kind of a tough couple of weeks. I gave a test that took lots of hours to grade. I had to write a bunch of letters of recommendation. I got my first COVID vaccine dose. Albert was cutting his molars. Albert got his 1-year vaccines. I think because of all that, it went by really fast and in a blur.

I got a few things done while my mom was here: I swept the garage and transplanted my pepper seedlings to the garden. We got two big rain storms which made all the planters really moist and juicy.

We did a few crafts too. My mom sewed my patch collection onto a olive green military-style jacket I found at Aldi. She warped my cricket loom with red and yellow yarn.

Last month

Last month I had decision fatigue. There is about one day every two weeks that I snap at DH and tell him to figure it out himself. He's not allowed to ask me. Like, dude, I'm no expert. Nobody showed me. Also with COVID there were some things I used to do to refresh and restore that I can't do now. Like getting a massage and skating at the roller rink. 😪 I am trying to show up for my online fitness classes, but like you, I have some stuff going on with my body that is undiagnosed. I have pain in my extremities (hands, wrists, feet, ankles) that makes it hard to go "out for a walk" plus it has been 100's of degrees Fahrenheit or poor air quality for weeks. Yet somehow I am managing to do all the cooking and cleaning and taking care of baby and working a part-time job.

Last month, Ha ha. My baby is kind of delayed in rolling, but he can sit unassisted. He doesn't do any other pre-crawling milestones like hands-and-knees, commando, scooting, etc. My mom's fitness group was saying that kids tend to be early walkers OR early talkers. My baby is a chatterbox so I'm betting he's gonna be an early talker.

Last month, I celebrated the birth of my nephew Theo. I keep a cardboard box in the kitchen and as soon as LO outgrows something, I throw it in the box (clean). When the box is full, I ship it to my sister.

Last month, I wanted to buy stuff online just to have something to look forward to. Like baby Halloween costumes, and silly Christmas outfits. But I am also kind of crafty, thrifty, in to upcycling and hand-me-downs. We plan to go to the beach next weekend but with COVID uncertainty, we haven't made any holiday plans and it's kind of depressing. It was 108 deg F here yesterday, triple digits all week, so we're stuck inside hard-core. Which is probably a contributing factor to my desire for restless spending.

Last month, I felt like it is a struggle to feed purees AND breastmilk, do tummy time AND read/sing and do something for myself AND a little housework in these 2.5 hour wake windows. The days are flying by. I also feel a bit guilty. My mom was here the first 2 weeks of September. She's been gone 3 weeks. The first week after she left I cried EVERY day because I missed the help. DH has been trying to do more these past 2 weeks. He kind of asked me the other day if I noticed his contribution. It has been better but I told him I adjusted so it's fine now. I think he was asking if his help was helping. I don't know if I should have praised him for helping more. But why do dads say they babysit their own kids? That's called parenting when it's yours. Right? I do appreciate the help from him on folding diapers and meal prepping. So why can't I just express that? I think it's because I still have to do the larger share of being with LO. In terms of hours, DH is in charge of LO for 6.5% of the time. That leaves me with LO for 93.5% of the time. I don't know why [this ](https://www.fatherly.com/love-money/parenting-strategies-advice/sharing-parenting-jobs-couples-therapist-advice/) makes me mad.

Last month, feeding Albert a meal takes more like an hour. Setting everything out. Feeding one tiny bite at a time. Cleaning up. Drinking water practice included. I have started thinking of it as a meal we eat together. I alternate bites for him and bites for me. Or bites for him while I exercise. My baby is a slow eater I guess.

Last month I felt clutter fatigue. I am sick of all the brightly colored plastic crap around the house. For context, I had a kinda miminalist tiny house life before baby, complete with eco-friendly car-free commute. I am now a suburban-living minivan-driving buyer of toys for my little monster. We do get used toys, but they pile up along with the bassinet and infant carseat that we've outgrown. The recycling centers are closed due to COVID and I am fully fantasizing about throwing a bunch of stuff to the curb. Send photos of your organization porn. Any minimalist mamas out there want to brag?

Last month, MIL made a comment disparaging teachers. She implied that teachers "don't want to work" and that's why they are teaching remotely. She asked if I am still being paid the same amount now that we are virtual. She asked if the students get a discounted tuition. As if online instruction is a choice. As if schools that are face-to-face haven't had COVID outbreaks. As if virtual instruction is effortless. As if the value of live instruction via Zoom is less than the value of being "on campus." It hurts because I'm a teacher. It hurts because I am working as hard as ever. Students have said that having both live lectures and access to high-quality recordings has been a game-changer. We teachers still plan lessons. We teachers still assign and grade the same homework. We teachers still hold office hours. The only thing we don't do is the commute (less driving/use of transit = better air quality and lower COVID risk). I fully appreciate how difficult it is for working parents who are now supervising their children's online instruction at home. COVID has been disruptive for EVERYONE IN THE WORLD. I can imagine as a working parent the relief of sending a child to school. But I get defensive when people imply that teachers are just being lazy and not wanting to work. We're already pretty underpaid. We're already doing more by learning how to be our own audio engineers, lighting experts, transitioning our content into a virtual medium, trying to create rapport with students through Zoom and email. We're doing a lot of things we've never done before (which takes extra time). To suggest that we should be paid less is more than mildly insulting.

Last month, we had a good time at the beach. Super big thanks to Ashley Maddox for posting her beach packing list.

⭐umbrella/tent
⭐chairs
⭐towel/blanket
⭐WATER!!!
⭐rash guard bathing suit
⭐floppy hat
⭐sunscreen
⭐sand toys
⭐baby carrier
⭐baby pool

We used everything on this list and we were "on the sand" for 3 hours. Baby took 2 naps. One in the carrier and one in the tent. We reapplied sunscreen midway. Nobody got burned. Adults had PB&J sandwiches.

Last month, I bought some dorky outfits! I know I'm not the World's best photographer but I plan to do the photos here at home. This [video](https://www.facebook.com/295199098300/posts/10158215666078301/) was my inspiration.

Last month, we went to the beach on Saturday with MIL. So tired we didn't unpack the car until Sunday. DH was watching LO while I was in class Tuesday night and realized we forgot to put the changing mat in the diaper bag. We had a disposable puddle pad and a recieving blanket so we used those. To me it was no big deal but DH got insanely upset. We went to bed angry on Tuesday night. Wednesday night we talked it out and I recalled the last time LO was changed. I was standing outside our vehicle and LO was on the front passenger seat. DH said he guessed I put the changing pad under the seat, he went out to the car and found it. I thought he was mad about the lost changing pad because of work stress but it turns out it is a combination of him being anxious about dealing with poop and being paranoid about being out and about with LO and not having the supplies necessary for diaper changes. He rightly reminded me that I am primarily home with LO and he takes the baby out while I WFH. I thought it was a strange thing to be upset about especially since we have another changing pad and LOTS of puddle pads and recieving blankets. DH is usually so willing to throw money at a problem, i.e. just buy another one. I couldn't understand why he would be so worked up. TLDR: we resolved the issue but it took 24 hours.

Last month, I looked in the mirror and saw my C-section scar. My belly used to overhang so much that I didn't see the scar, so I guess that's progress? I have for better or for worse been doing Zoom fitness classes 3-4x per week. In the beginning, starting 3 weeks after LO was born, it was more for community than for a workout. I modify what I don't feel comfortable doing. I did exercises for diastasis recti instead of whatever ab stuff they were doing. It's been 3 months of specific diastasis recti work and I feel my core is stronger. I feel my whole body is stronger. I used to wear LO during the workouts otherwise he would cry. He's now good with jumping or hanging out in his swing or high chair. I had to grab a 12 lb medicine ball because I missed having the extra weight. My instructor said she had to wear one of her kids until about 7 months and that's where we're at so I guess that's also a win. We got a bicycle helmet for LO and a seat attached, but I don't know if he is developmentally ready or physically strong enough to go for a bike ride. We've done two short outings and he cries when we hit bumps. I don't want to hurt his little body and it is illegal to ride on the streets with a child less than 1 year. I was a runner like 5 years ago but I'm afraid to run now because breastfeeding and my feet hurt so much. I am hoping to get back to outdoor stuff when summer is over. This week, we're under a heat advisory again, until 5pm Friday due to triple digit temperatures (Fahrenheit).

Last month, I realized babies had to be put down for naps. I didn't know about this. I guess I thought they would just get tired and conk out. I feel like managing baby's schedules for diapers, feeding, exercise, learning and sleeping is a full-time job. Dang I was so naïve.

Last month, These just arrived today. ❤❤❤ > I love. I feel so much better. Nicewin
Arch Support Brace for Men & Women Elastic Copper Bandage Foot Care Brace for Pain Relief of Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Spurs, Flat Feet

Last month, we went to the Farmer's Market to get fresh produce and the grocery store to pick up meat & dairy. We were winning at meal prep.

Last month, I got a baby break from 2am - 3:30am and got some deep sleep. My husband supervised LO instead of me. DH says to me this morning at 5:50am just before he heads off to work... maybe one day LO will sleep independently in his pack & play. I was like, watch out what you hope for. Hope is a dangerous thing. I just don't think my baby is that type of baby. Maybe other babies do it, maybe not, but I don't want to risk fantasizing about something like that. But I do understand how that sounds like an attractive prospect. I just don't want to dwell on wishful thinking because I don't want to resent my baby for what he can't or won't do. Or maybe what he isn't doing yet. Also, I noticed my wrists don't hurt anymore. So I now have the answer to my question of "how long after baby is born will I have carpal tunnel?" The answer is 7 months. Some baby-related stuff is really annoying and produces anxiety because there are so many questions and so few answers. Or the answer is: it depends. Or the answer is: it's different for every mom. I feel like I can deal with a situation if I know it's temporary. If I feel like it will never end, I lose hope and start to dwell on despair. I was reading that the breasts may continue to produce milk for year(s) after your baby is no longer nursing. So I guess the mysteries of my body will continue to unfold.

Last month, I wondered why my husband INSISTS on talking to me while I'm trying to get LO to fall asleep. I feel like I've told him a million times that verbalization (words) make LO's ears and brain perk up, which is the opposite of him falling asleep. I hum and rock but I won't even sing songs with words or read a story because it winds the baby up instead of calming him down. DH doesn't seem to understand this, or he just doesn't care. He keeps talking to me and I shoosh him and he gets mad and keeps on talking and asking me stuff and we end up madder and madder at each other. Whyeee? Can't we just agree that if the baby is on his way to sleep we can talk later?

Last month, we got some childproofing underway FINALLY!!!! My WFH setup is in the main room and it was an absolute mess of cables. With the way this baby grabs everything within reach, I know the second he can crawl that desk will be a target for LO.

Last month, I realized that I used to be a total hater when it came to spelling and grammar. Like if someone turned in an assignment with a bunch of typos, run-on sentences, fragments, disarrayed paragraphs, etc. I would think, "What is with this person? Don't they use spellcheck? Why can't they proofread and see that this doesn’t make sense?" Now that I type everything one-handed on 4 hours of sleep, I'm so forgiving. I'm like wow, that was a good try. I think I know what you meant. There are lots of unexpected ways my son has changed me as a person.

Last month, we cleaned the house on Friday and Saturday. Got our flu shots (mom, dad and baby) last week. Cooked a big meal with leftovers yesterday. We walked a leisurely 5k (mom, dad, baby and doggo) and ate lunch at a hot dog stand. 🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭 👨‍👩‍👦 🐩 The weather here was perfect, overcast and cool. It really felt like we did something significant. Also randomly crossed paths with two separate professor friends. It was nice to see other adults.

Last month, my husband stepped it up after I apologized to him for "rage cleaning." I have a verbally-abusive mom. She would name-call all of us every time she was cleaning up the house. Called us lazy and useless and worse. I delayed starting a family because I was afraid of being like that. I get into that headspace every so often, but I don't say it outloud. I just get upset and quiet and kind of slam things a bit more than I would if I weren't upset. I waited until I wasn't upset. DH actually said that he would've waited a couple more days to do the cleaning but he would have done it eventually. He said, "it wasn't like I was trying to wait you out." So I told him that I already had consciously waited 24 hours to see if he would lift a finger and that's why I was upset when I finally did it myself. Backstory: He invited his dad over for a formal meal on Saturday and so I was hoping he would take the initiative to cook and clean because it was a special occasion that he had initiated. I designated DH as the "boss" of the event. He was in charge of all meal planning, shopping, cooking, cleaning. I said that I would assist but not be "in charge." I suffer from decision fatigue as it is with LO and I just didn't need a special occasion on top of everyday baby-rearing. Sometimes I think the tables need to be turned or the shoe put on the other foot for us to appreciate each other. Two weekends ago, I did all the shopping and it was exhausting. DH does all the "outside of the house" tasks so that includes shopping. It helped me appreciate the energy required for that task which I haven’t been doing since covid times began / baby was born.

Last month, I got $125 worth of toys for $17.25 at the CastaIc consignment sale. It's kind of unbelievable that I'm so bad at choosing toys that are at an appropriate developmental level. The way toys are sold is in bundles so if you want one specific thing, often you get 3 things you didn't necessarily want. Since they're all out of the box they have to be cleaned. Also I look them up to see how to clean and the age range. I then sort them into bins by age and put away anything LO isn't ready for. I guess even with all that, it's a good deal. Bench with 3 bins for $30 for toy [organization](https://imgur.com/gallery/PD7TgEi).

One month ago

One month ago, I noticed LO seems to have liked to be worn a lot more when he was smaller. Now he's in and out of a carrier in like 20 minutes. But hey, 20 minutes is better than zero.

One month ago, I wrote that my son nursed 5-6x in daytime and 2-4x overnight. He nurses to sleep, but he generally pops off after 30 minutes. He eats on one side per feed. This is relatively new behavior. My LO used to sleep through the night so I would MOTN pump. Now LO is so active during the day, he has trouble calming down to eat. This is why I think he is needing to eat more at night. He sometimes only feeds for 5-7 minutes during the daytime and keeps popping on and off to look around.

One month ago, I tie-dyed some 12m and 18m onesies. It was heart-wrenching to speed through the process of tieing and dyeing while DH tried to put the screaming baby to bed. I untied them and rinsed them in the sink while DH was at work and LO was crying in his swing. I sorted them into bins according to size. My baby was already too big for his 9m clothes. I measured him today. He is 28.5 inches long. He weighs 16 lbs 9 oz. His head is 44 cm around. So for his age, he is in the 99th percentile for length and the 53rd percentile for weight.

One month ago, I realized the pack 'n' play with the "napper" level, bassinet and quick-release changing table had a weight limit of 15 lbs. I started to look for other changing tables and some have a weight limit of only 20 pounds! I put a changing pad on top of my dresser in the dining room. My husband has an aversion to changing baby on a dining table or other food-related surface. It's working very well.

One month ago, I wrote that prior to becoming a mom, I didn't comprehend the bond that forms between mothers and babies. I have a deep well of patience and energy for this LO. I feel insane when he is crying and when I can't see or hear him. Even though he is outside my body now, I still feel we're connected through breastfeeding. Sometimes I feel he's like a parasite, but in the best way. More like symbiosis. I call him my little barnacle. I didn't expect to enjoy pregnancy so much. I had terrible PMS and painful periods in adolescence and adulthood, but while on hormones for my egg retrieval and pregnant, I felt more womanly and feminine than ever. I felt all "Sugar and spice. And everything nice," when I had been pretty bitchy before. I didn't expect to appreciate my breasts this much. Now I feel they have fulfilled their true purpose and I am grateful to have carried them all these years.

One month ago, I was exhausted. I was unsuccessful at getting LO to nap in PNP instead of on my lap. I made pear, plum and butternut squash purees for LO. I washed the toys we bought from the consignment sale. I tried to find Zoom-friendly tops that fit over my milk-filled breasts, and found 6 that kinda worked.

One month ago, baby started waking up every 1.5-2 hours all night long. I guess it was leap 5.

One month ago, I ran a load of laundry with no detergent. Had too much inner debate about whether to wash a couple of my shirts. Let it smell like me so baby can nap with it... or wash all? Felt moisture on my arm. Wondered if it was my own sweat, spit-up, or did baby just pee on me? And do I want to know the answer? Had my first day teaching online yesterday with DH watching LO upstairs during. Baby made it 65 minutes without crying. Those last 10 minutes of class were the hardest. Hopefully it will get better.

Nursery

Quilt gallery

The theme of our nursery isn't something I intentionally chose. What happened was that my MIL gave us a few quilts that were sewn for our nephews (her grandchildren). I washed them before Albert was born but then just set them aside for awhile. It didn't seem right to let him play on something that was almost 20 years old.

I also have a quilt that is 40 years old that my mom sewed for me before I was born. And I have a quilt that I made for my baby. There is also quilted pillows and a cushion for the window seat that I quilted out of old jeans about 3 years ago. There is a graduation quilt that people signed when I finished my undergrad in 2002, so 18 years ago.

The furniture that ended up being SUPER useful was the changing table and the glider. Albert isn't really at the point where he sleeps well in his crib, but I am confident we'll get there eventually. The gliding footrest is EVERYTHING. We didn't use the bassinet for long, instead we put Albert into a cosleeper. The most clutch feature of the cosleeper was the vibrating clip-on heart. We also use a separate white noise machine. We do have a baby-cam setup, but since he co-sleeps we don't realy use it unless he goes to bed and we stay up late, or vice versa, he sleeps in and we get up early.

buying all the things

Teacher here. Just bought $291 of technology to be able to teach remotely in fall semester.

In the past 3 months I have bought $367 worth of new items for my baby. Mostly stuff that could have been on my registry if I had known I would be needing it.

In that same span of time, I have bought $309 in new clothes and a book for myself. I justified those as a) Mother's day. b) my 40th Birthday. and c) my old clothes don't fit and I never leave the house anymore anyway so why not get more comfy clothes.

Los Angeles kids consignment is having contact-free shopping [online](https://lakidsonline.com/) for just a few days. I bought about $300 in toys, clothes and feeding stuff for the next stages. Pick up is by appointment.

I am not a big fan of online shopping for new items. I prefer to shop at thrift stores and get things secondhand where possible. The closures of local businesses has made this difficult. We did go to Children's Orchard in Santa Clarita and got a few zipper PJ's and a Sit-me-up chair for $30. It was nice because new those PJs cost $10 each. Because it was 50% off all blue tag items, we got most of them for $1 or $2.

I guess I am trying to justify all this shopping and chalk it up to "this is us doing the best we can, given the current parameters." I hope it's not just me over here like... I'm bored. Let me buy something to cheer me up. I hope this stuff is needed, will be used for years to come when the pandemic-related restrictions are permanently lifted.

And also, my sister's baby shower is in like 2.5 weeks. I can't go due to COVID and it doesn't seem right to fly or drive halfway across the country now. I feel like I would be a leper coming from a hotspot. But I SO wish I could be there!

One thing I have been doing is saving all my Amazon boxes and filling them with items our baby has outgrown and mailing them to my sister. I'm sure we've probably spent $300 in shipping costs, but it is helping me feel like I'm helping her prepare for her baby.

aspirational

So much of mommy social media is aspirational. It's unattainable yet attractive. Nobody wants their Instagram showcasing photos of dim lighting, dust and clutter. But that's where this pandemic has me sitting right now.

Aspirational products in the mommy sphere I would include a Snoo. It is priced in the $1,100-$1,400 range. It is intended for newborns and infants up to 25 lbs and/or 6 months of age. Even the Halo bassinet is $275. We got a used one for $28 that we only used for a month before switching to a $77 cosleeper with a vibration attachment.

Another one I would say is the DockATot. Priced between $175-$315, it is essentially a fancy pillow with a removable cover. I thought I needed it for a minute, but I'm ultimately glad I bought another product instead.

Another category of aspirational baby products is prams. One, for example, costs $529-$699. The BOB jogging stroller costs $399-$699. I'm not saying a jogging stroller isn't useful. I just feel like maybe it's priced high because not everyone can afford it and that is on purpose. It's a product that communicates to other moms that you have the financial means to purchase such a high-priced item.

Baby Brezza Formula Pro Advanced, priced at $249, is like a one touch espresso machine for making up baby bottles. Now we're guilty on this one! We have the Baby Brezza Bottle Warmer ($70) and Baby Brezza Sterilizer ($100) when you could just boil some water in a pot for free. I do use these two appliances EVERY DAY, but I think each person would have to decide for themselves whether they want such luxury.

We are transferring our son to his crib, he is 3.5 months old and just under 15 pounds.

I have been thinking about the phrase "aspirational" lately. In marketing, it applies to like high-end items that not everyone can afford. There are lots of things like that for babies. But I also see a lot of aspirational Instagram accounts full of moms and kids where everything is clean and everyone is happy and gorgeous.

Lately I've been putting healthy eating (meal planning, shopping, cooking, washing up) and working out (getting organized, wearing the right gear, showering before/after) in the aspirational bucket. I want an Instagram worthy meal. "Eat the rainbow" and all that. I want to glitter and glisten with glamorous sweat. But some days all I do is tend to the baby. Either he's needy or I'm exhausted or both. Sometimes the fitness and clean eating are just aspirational.

I have nowhere near lost "the baby weight." I struggled to lose about 30 lbs before I was pregnant. Then gained it back during pregnancy. Lost a bunch quick after delivery. Gained some back now while breastfeeding. I feel flabby but where am I really going now because pandemic. At least there's less to do now where looks matter.

My MIL and SIL said something kind of weird on Mother's Day, which was supposed to be our big "sip and see" party. They said, "you can look frumpy for a year. But after that..." yeah well I'm just taking this full year then to focus on repairing my body and enjoying spending time with my baby. I give myself permission to take my time and not get too caught up in aspirations.

Cloth diapering

How to get started? How many cloth diapers do you need? What are some laundry issues that you may encounter? What type of fabric is used in cloth diapers? How soon should I be getting all this stuff?

For tiny baby, we've been cloth diapering since 3 weeks old. We used 28 flour sack towels (FSTs) with 2 polyester/polyurethane laminate PUL covers and 2 snappi fasteners. I loved this as a supplement to the 8 all-in-one BumGenius size 1 we had. It was possible to do laundry every other day.

double FST with Snappi in kite fold

Thirsties Cover (Size 2, 9-36 months, 18-40 lbs)

The FSTs were folded in a newborn kite fold. What I would do is fold them in half lengthwise fresh out of the drier then let them sit overnight. The next day I would do the folding into a diaper shape. I have a nice basket to hold them until needed. FSTs are a way to diaper using flats.

Bummis Super Whisper Wrap Cover (size small, 8-15 lbs)

We had a set of 4 newborn all-in-ones from bumgenius, but I have already passed those along to my sister. We never used them because we didn't start cloth diapers until our baby was 3 weeks old, he grew fast, and his inguinal hernia when it bulges actually needs a lot of room. Maybe they would have been more useful for a girl.
BumGenius AIOs in Size 1

What I have not used yet are Fitted Sloomb Overnight Bamboo Fleece aka OBFs (Sustainablebabyish) are made from 70% viscose from bamboo / 30% organic cotton.

AI2 - all in two. I don't think I have any of these. They are a cover and an insert that snaps into place.

Soaker - the absorbent part of an AI2, fitted, or AIO diaper.  Lays in or snaps in. For AIOs, the soaker is sewn into the diaper iself.

Insert - the absorbent part of a pocket diaper.  The same thing as a soaker but is inserted into the pocket.

Doubler - used on top of or in addition to a soaker/insert when baby is older/a heavy wetter/at night. Meant to provide extra absorbancy. Thinner and smaller than an insert. Sometimes called "newborn inserts".

Booster - same thing as a doubler, not related to staying dry or wicking, meant to boost the absorbency.

Liner - usually single-layer pieces of fabric laid in a diaper to either create a stay-dry feeling or to make disposing of poop easier or to protect the diaper when using diaper cream. Can be disposable or reusable.

FSTs from Amazon we bought 30 more!

How often you should clean your washing machine — and how to do it https://www.today.com/series/how-often-should-you/how-clean-washing-machine-t20131

Dec 27 - bought new dryer (week 29)
Jan 27 - washed new CDs (week 34)
Feb 4 - washed UCLA used CDs (week 35)
Feb 24 - washed CDs from Mykel (week 38)
Feb 25 - washed CDs from Christiana

You will also get a lot of use from two Pail liners that you can alternate. They can be washed with the diapers (turned inside out) and then I line dry the bag and PUL covers, while the flats (FSTs) I dry in the dryer.

To jump or not to jump?

By some definitions, my baby is an infant at 2 months old. We got him an Evenflo exersaucer and a Pop! jumper as well as a batmobile walker. He is crazy active and we're doing tummy time until he gets a bit stronger.

Found the Evenflo Exersaucer on the left abandoned at the curb, so I washed it with dishsoap and water and changed the batteries and it's good as new. Had to order 2 new feet for the arch and a new spring for one of the legs, but I feel good upcycling something that would have ended up in the landfill. The Pop! summer jumper was $60 and I hope we can take it to MIL's house and maybe to the beach. Yes I know these are not recommended until baby is older, but I wanted to spend that COVID stimulus money on something special.

I also bought some PJs from the Gap for me. Maternity Nursing Sleep Cami and Maternity Sleep Shorts. It seems like they are taking for.ev.er to arrive though. They haven't even shipped yet and I ordered on 5th of May. Got ~50% off by using two promo codes. Free shipping and free returns. I hope everything fits, I am not a fan of online shopping for stuff I would usually try on. Hoping the tops are a bit supportive, breathable, yet not so tight that they lead to clogged ducts. I realize this is a big ask.

I got the following email from Gap yesterday, "we are experiencing delays in processing and shipping your order. We're unable to ship your order within the time frame promised." I am sad because Gap lets you order top and bottom separately, which is nice if you are a pear shape. So I went ahead and bought the following from Kohl's.

Women's Croft & Barrow Lush Luxe Tank & Shorts Pajama Set
These I like the most. The shorts are long enough.

Women's Simply Vera Vera Wang Sleep Tank and Boxer Shorts Pajama Set
These I only like the top. The bottoms are more like underwear than shorts.

Women's Apt. 9 Solid Cami & Shorts Pajama Set
These I hate. The fabric feels cheap and the shorts are also like underwear.

I was hoping to get something comfortable to wear around the house all day all summer long. I hate online shopping, for this reason. Do I return or exchange the stuff I don't like? What would happen to the clothes that get returned? Will they be burned or resold?

Postpartum Part 3: registry

I want to talk about my baby registry: what was on it, what we bought and what we have used. We ended up getting most of what was on our registry, either as gifts or we bought it ourselves. Some items we were able to find used and other items we bought new. One mistake I made was deleting items that we bought instead of just marking it as purchased. Luckily I transferred the registry items to a google sheet early on, so the entirety of the list was preserved.

Memberships

Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens
LA County Arboretum
Costco Membership

Colleagues at work bought us the Zoo and Costco memberships. We have our Arboretum membership but I think it expires in June or July. Unfortunately the coronavirus has made it pretty unfavorable to go out and use any of these. I am hoping as Albert gets older and as we emerge from this pandemic that we will be able to use and enjoy these memberships.

Baby Gear

Pack N Play (with bassinet and changing table)
Glow in the dark Pacifier (2 ct)
Cradle n' Swing
Pacifier (3 ct)
Batman Walker
Pacifier Clip
Pacifier Holder
Lillebaby Airflow Carrier

A pal gave us a pack and play but without the bassinet and changing table. Once our baby was home from the hospital (we live in a two story condo) we realized that we really needed a bassinet and changing table on BOTH floors. We had a bassinet and changing table on the second floor near our bed that we got secondhand. I guess the secondhand pack and play will probably live in the van so that we have it when we visit family.

The only pacifiers we have used so far are the ones that we got free in sample boxes. They're working well so far. We also got some pacifiers as gifts at baby showers. We got a couple of pacifier clips from a friend. I thought I would not use pacifiers but it turns out Albert loves them so I guess those ideals are out the window. He also loves his swing. We got that secondhand and my mom kindly figured out how to take it apart and washed all the fabric parts so it was nice and clean for Albert when he came home from the hospital. As far as I can tell, the weight limit is 15 pounds and he's already 11.5 pounds, so we're definitely getting our money's worth now while we can.

The Batman Walker is something my husband wanted to get and one of his bros bought and shipped it to us. So I'm glad about that. It's currently sitting under the TV in pieces. I guess we'll put it together when it gets closer to the time when Albert is able to use it (when he can hold his head up). The baby carrier issue is something I want to cover in a separate post. Let's just say for now that this particular carrier we picked out by going to Buy Buy Baby and trying all of them on. This one was comfortable for both my husband and I. It went on sale and I rode the bus to Hollywood to buy it. Then we ended up getting 4 more carriers as gifts so it's now just one of many that we have.

Transportation

Graco Modes Stroller
Avocado Stroller Toy
Infant Car Seat
Seat Mirror
Thule Yepp Mini
Scamp Kids Bike Helmet
Weekender Bag

The stroller and car seat we definitely love. We haven't got the bike seat or bike helmet yet. We might get a trailer for the bike. We didn't buy a diaper bag because I found that I had a vintage bag that works perfectly. A friend gave us another stroller, and we only used it for the first time this past week, but I almost had a panic attack because the baby was so tiny and exposed in there, and heaven forbid we left without covering the stroller up. I was freaked out that he would get either sunburned or sick (or both) so we turned around and went back home after less than a block. So I would highly recommend adding a stretchy carseat cover or two. We got one from a friend and use it daily!

Clothing

Gown (2 pack)
Halo SleepSack Swaddle

It's a good thing we didn't buy too many clothes. I had hardly any "newborn" size stuff because I thought there would be a chance that my baby would be born too big for them. We bought footed PJs in newborn size after he was born and we realized that he'd be needing those. He had enough of them in the 0-3 month and 3-6 month size, which we had received as gifts. Also, we learned that Albert likes to have his hands free, so he would have hated the swaddles.

Feeding

Aden Little Bibs
Rocking Chair w/ Footrest
Stokke High Chair
My Brest Friend / Boppy
Burp Cloth (Burt's Bees)
Baby Brezza Bottle Warmer
Baby Brezza Sterilizer
Medela Manual Pump
Breast Milk Bags (100 ct)
5 oz Bottle Set (3 pack)
8 oz Bottle Set (3 pack)

We were gifted more bibs than I know what to do with since I keep forgetting to put one on him. Although people have told me that he might start drooling more as his teeth come in, so the bibs may be more useful in the future. We do use the rocking chair, which we found secondhand at Goodwill for $15. The high chair we will start using when Albert starts eating solid food and can hold his head up. We definitely use the breastfeeding pillows every day. I got the Boppy free for joining First 5 LA and we found the Brest Friend secondhand in Burbank.

The burp cloths are something that I sent dear husband out for just after baby was born. We didn't get them as a gift so we bought them at regular price ourselves. But they have been absolutely fantastic. We have 12 and I would say that is a good number. I was on the fence about the Baby Brezza, actually I was leaning towards not getting it, but once we had to put the baby on a bottle it became quite useful quite quickly. I also didn't fully understand the purpose of the breastmilk freezer bags, but when you have an oversupply then you can save it for 5 weeks. Then when baby is going through a growth spurt (and is hungrier), bam! You can pull extra supply out of the freezer. I had a "freezer stash" built up that we exhausted during Albert's 3-week growth spurt and I am currently building up a new stash for his 6-week growth spurt.

I was worried (and still am) that the composition of the "good stuff" in the breastmilk is altered by refrigeration and/or freezing then defrosting, but I'm trying not to get too paranoid about that. I guess if we can take enzymes and freeze them at -80 deg C and then defrost them for an assay and they still show activity, then what am I worried about? See, this is why I write. So that I can process what I'm worried about and talk myself through it.

A friend brought over a 15 gallon storage tub full of breastpumps and pump parts and bottles and pacifiers and baby spoons. It was overwhelming to me prior to Albert's birth, but when my mom arrived, she helped me sort through it all and put out the bottles and nipples that we would need. We did purchase a few more of the size that is working for us now, but having an assortment to get us started was super helpful. We also had a set of six matching Avent bottles that we got free from Motherhood Maternity every time I went shopping there, so we use those for formula. I will write a separate post about the breastpump and parts and schedule etc.

Pump Parts

Tubing
Breast Shield
Membranes
Valves
Car Adapter
Connectors
Nursing Bra
Nursing Pads

The thing I will say is that the nursing bra has allowed me to pump hands-free and this has been completely liberating. I have used an infinity scarf that a friend gave me as a way to cover up the pump parts while I'm pumping. It also keeps me warm if I get chilly. The washable bamboo nursing pads really are everything. We have definitely used the car adapter. I have an apron-style nursing cover, but it's black and I haven't used it yet. Being that we're in Southern California, I'm more worried about getting too hot rather than being too cold. I don't have a lot of black things in my wardrobe, but I'm certainly accumulating them. It's like my mom outfits are either black or dark blue. I don't know why that is because dark colors seem to show the spit-up more obviously, but hey, I'm not designing the clothes.

Bath Time

Puj Tub
Ducky Thermometer
Hooded Towel
Bath Sponge

We have definitely used the tub, hooded towel and washcloths (which came as a set). Never got the sponge. Definitely use the ducky thermometer. A popular gift at our baby showers was baby body wash and shampoo so we have about 80 oz of that. Someone also got us the cutest bath spout cover that looks like an elephant. I don't know how we ended up with an elephant theme for our baby's stuff, but I'm not mad about it. I can't wait for this pandemic to ease up so we can take a walk at the Zoo.

Diapering

Disposable Diapers size 0 (36 pack)
Disposable Diapers size 1 (196 pack)
Disposable Diapers size 2 (37 pack)
Dy-Dee Diaper Service
Toilet Sprayer Kit
SprayMate
Diaper Backpack
Diaper Genie
Diaper Genie Refills
Cloth Diaper (style A)
Bum Inserts (6 pack)
Cloth Diaper (style B)
Wipes

We have been using disposable diapers. They get you started at the hospital and it's hard to switch to something else when what you're doing is working. So we did end up buying two boxes (194 count) of size 1 huggies little snugglers. We've used a whole box. The weight range for huggies size 1 is 8-14 lbs. We sized Albert up from newborn size due to his hernia. When it's enlarged, the newborn diapers were too restrictive. He weighs 11.5 lbs today and according to the growth chart, he should be able to use those for about another 1-2 months. Huggies size 2 has a weight range of 12-18 pounds. We did get some size 2 honest diapers this past weekend, but I heard they run a bit small. It says that their diapers fit babies from 12-18 pounds, I guess, same as huggies.

The all-in-one (AIO) cloth diapers we got from a lady at UCLA came in newborn (4) and size one (8). We have lots of cloth diapers in the one-size-fits-all (OS) which Albert isn't quite big enough for yet (33 pocket, 7 AIO, 16 PUL, 16 Sloomb and 122 inserts of various fabrics). I guess we'll go into those when he's fitting into them. Some of these we bought and some were generously gifted to us by friends.

We are currently using two PUL Diaper Covers (PUL = Polyurethane Laminate) that we use with 100% cotton flour sack towels (FSTs). We have 28 FSTs that I have folded into the kite newborn fold. We have about 12 snappi fasteners and an assortment of diaper pins. Doing diaper laundry every-other-day we end up washing about 8 FSTs and the 8 size 1 AIOs. So far, so good. Albert definitely cries more often in the FSTs than in the AIOs, most likely due to the microfiber liner in the AIOs that doesn't let him feel the wetness as intensely.

We haven't used the sprayer kit, but we did install it. It might come in handy as a bidet if the pandemic stretches out and there is really a toilet paper shortage. The SprayMate also has not been used yet. The need arises after the kid starts eating solid food (around 6 months). We decided to skip the diaper service and just get a stock of our own inventory and wash them ourselves. I think this is how the diapering category of our "actual" spending became the largest slice of the pie (see chart at the end of this post). We calculated that we would only have to cloth diaper for 6 months to "break even" with disposables. So if we can do it for longer than that, we will save money. At this time, when people are hoarding disposable diapers and wipes, it is good to have an alternative.

Nursery Decor

Crib
Crib Mattress
Crib Mattress Protector
Crib Mattress Fitted Sheets (2 pk)
Changing Table
Changing Pad
Changing Pad Cover
Bassinet
Crib Mobile
Nightlight

We were able to find a changing table used, which saved us some money. Our colleagues at work pooled their money and bought us the crib, mattress, mattress protector and sheets. One colleague got us the mobile. We got a free nightlight at our doctor's office. Another nightlight we found at IKEA. We ended up adding a cosleeper. The deluxe model comes with a sound, light, and vibration unit which works well for getting our baby to sleep in 30 seconds or less, on vibrate. The baby is also getting fascinated with mobiles, particularly on his swing, so when we transition him into his bassinet, he will probably enjoy the Trend Lab mobile that we have.

Health and Safety

Brush and Comb set
Medicine Dispenser
Hydrocortisone
Gas Relief Drops
Infant Tylenol
Rectal Thermometer
Nail Clippers
Nose Frida
Nose Frida Filters (20 ct)
Babyproofing Kit (46 pc)
Safety Gate

We got a comb at the hospital, the gas drops came with a medicine dispenser. We bought the nail clippers after baby was born. A friend gave us the Nose Frida. We haven't bought the safety gate yet, but we will. We bought the thermometer and other medications. The only thing we don't have so far is "gripe water" and we also bought probiotics after our baby was having a lot of reflux and gas.

Toys and Books

Mortimer Moose

We haven't bought this but we got a lot of toys as gifts from friends and family. We got a bunny that sings. We got a lion and a monkey. My mom tried to buy a snuggly toy, but the recommendation now is that baby has nothing in the crib with them, so I don't understand when the kid is supposed to play with the toy. I am guessing we'll get a Sophie la Girafe Teether and maybe a Skip Hop Farmstand Avocado Stroller Toy and maybe Mortimer Moose. We did register for some books: All Aboard National Parks, Quantum Physics for Babies, and Planting a Rainbow. We got some other books as gifts and others we bought at the used bookstore.

For the Parents

Bed Pad
Birth Ball
Exercise Ball Plugs

These items we bought for ourselves, but they have definitely been useful. The bed pad was something I used while waiting for my water to break. The birth ball I used every day while pregnant and I use it still now to calm baby and as a substitute for a chair. A friend gave me two peanut balls and a smaller exercise ball, but none of them had plugs. I found a pack of plugs on Amazon, which made them viable again. I felt very proud about that.

Forecast

Actual
In summary, the projected total amount of items on our registry was $3,500. The amount we saved was $1,200 which we accomplished by exploring consignment shops and Facebook marketplace. The amount we actually spent was $1,300 and the rest of the items we got as gifts.
